CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team opened the 2017 season with a 5-2 victory over NC Central on Saturday morning in Greenville, N.C. The Blue Hose start the season 1-0, while the Eagles drop to 0-2 in the early going.
PC opened the match with a sweep in doubles play. Ben Kelley and Joel Roberts teamed up at No. 1 for a 6-2 win, while Diego Manzanas and Jaime Castillo-Lopez earned a 6-3 victory at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point. Brandon Mills and Alejandro Bejar capped it off with a 6-3 win on court three to finish doubles play.
In singles, NC Central was able to claim the matches on the top two courts but the other four would go PC’s way. Manzanas battled his way on court one against Gabriel Cucalon, taking the opening set 7-6. Cucalon worked his back in to the match with a 7-6 win in set two, before taking the match with 6-4 advantage in set three.
Mills took the match on court three for PC, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, and Bejar won in similar fashion on court four, 6-4, 6-1. Kelley earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 to start the year and Roberts took the match at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3. Castillo-Lopez, in his first match at PC, dropped the match on court two, 6-1, 6-2.
PC will have a quick turnaround, taking on East Carolina tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in Greenville, N.C.
