The Presbyterian College volleyball team rallied from two sets down with a win in the third set, but couldn't overcome Winthrop in the fourth to fall to the Eagles, 3-1, in Big South volleyball action Thursday evening in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop took the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23, with PC winning set three, 25-17. The Eagles came back to win the fourth set and match, 25-23.
Set by Set
Winthrop broke open a 10-10 tie in the first set with a 4-1 run to build a 14-11 lead. PC rallied to tie the set at 17-17 and again at 20-20. Four straight from the Eagles gave the home team set point, 24-20, but a Samantha Del Toro kill stopped the drought. Emma Weakland sealed the win the next point with a kill to give Winthrop the 25-21 victory.
Winthrop saw a 17-11 second set lead evaporate off an 8-1 PC run to make it 19-18. Both teams traded points with back to back kills from Erin Eulitz tying it at 23-23. Weakland responded with two kills herself to give the Eagles the 25-23 win.
It was all PC in the third as the Blue Hose stormed ahead 15-8. The Blue Hose led by eight on several more occasions, including 23-15 off another Eulitz kill. PC cut it to six at 23-1, but kills from Del Toro and Sierra Davis gave the visitors the 25-17 win
PC opened the fourth set with a 16-11 lead, extending it to 18-12 off a Eulitz kill. Winthrop mounted a rally, using a 7-1 run to tie the set at 19-19. Stewart and Eulitz kills took PC back up by two, 21-19, before the Eagles tied it again at 21-21. Tied at 23-23 off a Del Toro kill, Winthrop collected back to back kills from Kelsey Schroll to complete the rally and take the 25-23 set and match win.
Players of the Matches
Samantha Del Toro led the Blue Hose with 13 kills, followed by Erin Eulitz with 10. Sara Rogers recorded 42 assists, with Mikayla Register adding 21 digs. Ashton Stewart had three block assists, while Sierra Davis put up tow block assists and two block solos.
Brianna Gray paced Winthrop with 16 kills, while Emma Weakland added 15. Siani Yamaguchi posted 27 assists, while Carlie Skelton recording 20 digs. Kelsey Schroll and Gray were tops for the Eagles on defense with five block assists each.
Stats of the Match
Winthrop held the kills advantage, 57-49, and had six more errors, 28-22. PC posted a .161 hitting percentage, compared to .180 for Winthrop. The Eagles out-blocked PC 12-8, and had 10 more digs, 80-70. Service aces were fairly even with PC holding the 6-5 edge.
PC drops to 5-25 overall and 3-12 in the league, while Winthrop improves to 15-16, 6-9.
PC plays its final match of the regular season Saturday, Nov. 12, at High Point. The match is set for 4 p.m.
