JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team wrapped up play at the Jacksonville Classic with two close 3-1 losses to UIC and Charlotte. PC fell to the Flames, 27-29, 22-25, 25-19, and 21-25, and to Charlotte, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, and 20-25.
How it Happened
UIC 3, PC 1
With the first set tied at 22-22 Samantha Del Toro, who recorded her team-leading sixth kill of the frame to give PC the one-point lead. The set went back and forth the next 10 points, with PC getting to set point twice. It was UIC that came out on top, capitalizing on a PC attack error and a service ace to come away with the 29-27 win.
Behind Erin Eulitz’s five kills, PC rallied to within one, 20-21 in the second set. Kyisha Hunt tallied two kills as UIC won the next four of six points to hold on to the 25-22 win.
Tied 11-11 in the third set, PC used four kills from Del Toro to build a 17-13 lead. The Blue Hose extended it to 22-17, before taking the 25-19 victory.
A back and forth battle in the fourth set, PC and UIC were tied six times early, the last at 13-13. A 6-2 run by UIC made it 19-15. PC rallied to within one, 20-21, off a 6-1 run, helped by kills from Eulitz and Sierra Davis. Davis would add her fourth kill of the set, but that would be the only points PC would pick up as UIC took the 25-21 set and match win.
Charlotte 3, PC 1
Charlotte stormed out to a 12-6 lead in set one, before settling on a 19-14 margin. Helped in part to kills from Martina Shamley, Davis, Eulitz, and Del Toro, PC cut the margin to two, 21-23, before a PC service error and a Charlotte service ace ended the rally, giving the 49ers the 25-21 win.
PC built a 14-9 lead in set two, helped by four kills from Ashton Stewart, but Charlotte rallied back with a 9-4 run to tie it up at 18-18. Tied again at 19-19, the 49ers outscored PC 6-2 to take the 25-21 win.
Trailing 15-17 in the third set PC rattled off a 7-2 to storm out to a 22-19 lead. Charlotte picked up a point, but the Blue Hose scored three unanswered, capped off by a Stewart kill, to win 25-20.
The fourth set was close throughout with neither team leading at any time by more than two points for much of the frame. Charlotte came back from down 16-18 with five straight, two coming from Katria Stewart kills to make it a three-point contest, 20-18. After PC cut it to two again at 19-21, Charlotte hit three in a row to get to match point, 24-19. A service error made it 24-20, but it was a kill from Molly Shaw to give the 49ers the 25-20 set and match win.
Players of the Match
Sierra Davis recorded a career-high 16 kills, while Erin Eulitz added 15 in the UIC loss. Sara Rogers posted a career-high tying three service aces and her 41 assists were just eight shy of her career mark.
Del Toro and Davis sparked the PC offense in match two against Charlotte with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Mikayla Register added a season-high 24 digs, which was also just two from her career-mark.
Stats of the Match
The Blue Hose matched up fairly even with UIC with the Flames coming out on top in kills, 55-51, and hitting percentage, .282-.218, and PC leading in digs, 72-65, and aces 8-5.
Against Charlotte, PC led in kills, 51-48, but had seven more errors, 25-18. The 49ers held the slight hitting percentage advantage, .242-.202, and service aces, 11-7. Blocks were a key for Charlotte, finishing with 12 total blocks, including 22 block assists. PC posted five total blocks.
• Against UIC three Blue Hose recorded double-digit kills in a match for the first time since Sept. 19, of last season. That was a span of 19 matches.
• The contest against UIC marked the first time this season a match hasn’t ended in three straight sets.
• Sara Rogers finished with 41 assists against UIC, marking the fourth time in five matches she has posted over 20.
• PC won the third set for the second match in a row, with the 25-20 decision versus Charlotte
• After posting a hitting percentage of under .100 for two matches in a row, PC has put together two in a row with over. 200.
• The 51 total digs against Charlotte was a season-high, with the 49 assists in the match against UIC also a season mark.
PC moves to 2-4, while UIC improves to 5-0, and Charlotte goes to 3-3 on the year.
PC heads up the road to Spartanburg Tuesday, Sept. 6, to take on Wofford in a 7 p.m., match.
