Halle Tripp recorded a career-high 22 kills to lead the Presbyterian College volleyball team to an impressive 3-2 five-set win over Gardner-Webb in Big South action Saturday afternoon at Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. PC won the match with scores of 25-16, 10-25, 25-18, 21-25, and 15-6.
PC improves to 4-23 overall and 2-11 in the Big South. The Blue Hose travel to Winthrop Nov. 13, for their final match of the regular season. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Gardner-Webb falls to 9-20, 3-9.
Tripp led all players with her career-high 22 kills and .425 hitting percentage. Samantha Del Toro was second in kills with 11. Sara Rogers added 49 assists, while Mikayla Register added 12 digs. PC hit .255 with 58 kills and 141 attacks. The Blue Hose finished with four total blocks and seven service aces.
Gardner-Webb was led by Taylor Lillard with 19 kills and Tyra Montour with 13. Justine Bowers had 21 assists, while Tinsley Fain posted 12 digs. GWU finished with 48 kills and a .195 hitting percentage. The Runnin’ Bulldogs posted 10 service aces and 10 total blocks.
After Gardner-Webb forced set five, PC opened with a 5-1 lead off three straight kills, with two coming from Tripp. GWU cut the margin to within two at 5-3 but two more kills by Tripp and a couple of Bulldog attack errors gave PC the 9-3 lead. GWU scattered three more points but it was all PC with the 6-3 run, capped by a Lena Gavin kill and service ace by Ashton Stewart, to give the home team the 15-6 fifth set and match win.
Leading by just two in the first, 12-10, PC used an 8-3 run to build a 20-13 lead. GWU could only muster three more as the Blue Hose took the 25-16 win.
A tale of two sets, Gardner-Webb dominated the second, taking a 21-5 lead before PC made it 23-7. The Blue Hose took three more points but fell 25-10.
Leading by just one, 17-16 in the third set, PC scored the next seven of the next eight points to make it 24-17. GWU took another point but a Martina Shamley kills iced the 25-18 third set win.
A back and forth battle early in the fourth, PC trailed 20-13 at one point. The Blue Hose chipped away at the lead to cut it to five at 23-18, with kills be Del Toro and Tripp making it a three-point contest, 24-21. It was a little too late as a Montour kills gave GWU the 25-21 fourth set win.
