GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team put forth a solid effort Sunday, but dropped a non-conference affair to nearby Furman by a 7-0 score.

The loss drops the Blue Hose to 1-3 on the young season.

”Furman is one of the best – if not the best – team we are going to face all year,” head coach Patric Hynes said. “We were out-matched, but competed hard in every spot, which is what we were looking for.”

On the doubles side, Michael Nicol and Brad Luciuk pushed Chris Rhyne and Andrei Chvetsov to an 8-4 contest at the No. 3 spot. At the second position, Patrick Fediuk and Andrew Lee dropped an 8-2 decision to Chris Motes and Jordan Walters. Matthew Martin and Zachary Sprouse, at the top slot, fell to Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman by an 8-1 count.

In the singles competition, Nicol forced Daniel Knause to extra points at the No. 2 position, but ended up losing the match by a 7-5, 6-1 score.

Sprouse, who has been playing solid early in his career, was able to take three points off Philipp Fuelkell in each set at the No. 4 spot, but was unable to earn the victory. Sprouse lost by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores.

Martin lost to Juc in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 at the top position while Fediuk fell to Motes 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 slot.

At No. 5, Lee was unable to earn a point in the first set off junior Jordan Walters, but came back in the second set to win one point. He lost the match 6-0, 6-1.

Mark Cannatelli, coming off the best match of the young season, lost by identical scores to Sawyer Duncan at the No. 6 position.

The Blue hose return to action Wednesday as they play host to nearby Wofford in a 3 p.m., match at the Templeton Tennis Center.
