It took a late run by the Camels in the second half to survive the Blue Hose in a back and forth Big South battle as Campbell came away with a 77-73 win over the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team Thursday evening in Buies Creek, N.C. Four Blue Hose scored in double-figures with Romeo Crouch leading the way with 16.
Scoring the Game
Campbell opened strong in the first half, building a 13-3 lead three minutes in, then increasing it to 19-9, 14:52 left, the only points by PC three three-pointers from Adam Flagler, Davon Bell, and Romeo Crouch. Campbell would score just once, a three-pointer by Chris Clemons at 12:42, as PC rallied with a 21-3 run to take an eight-point lead, 30-22, 6:21. Highlighting the run were back to back three-pointers from JC Younger, as well as two more threes from Flagler, who led the team in scoring at the half with 13 points.
After an almost six-minute scoring drought, Campbell began hitting shots again, rallying back with a 9-2 run to cut the margin to one, 32-31, 2:53 left. The Camels would retake the lead off an Isaac Chatman jumper at 1:06, but a Crouch three-pointer, the team’s eighth of the half, put PC back on top, 37-35, just over 30 seconds left. Five seconds before the break, Andrew Eudy, who scored 17 points in the first, hit a jumper to tie the game at 37-37 at intermission.
It was a back and forth battle for most of the second half with five ties in the opening seven and a half minutes alone. PC did take a five-point lead, 55-50 at 10:24, off four unanswered, but Campbell came back with 14 straight, highlighted by a Clemons dunk and three-pointer, to take a nine-point lead, 64-55, 5:41 remaining. A Francois Lewis free throw at 4:45 snapped an almost five-minute drought. Another Lewis free throw, followed by a Crouch three-pointer at 4:45 put PC back in the game, 64-60. Clemons responded with a three as part of an 8-4 run to take the lead back to eight, 72-64, 2:45 on the clock.
PC answered with another three from Younger to cut the margin to five, but it was Clemons again with his sixth three of the night to put the home team ahead by eight, 75-67, just over two minutes left. Bell hit two free throws and a layup to cut the Campbell lead back to four with a minute and a half to go, but Eudy connected on two clutch free throws with under thirty seconds to keep the visitors at bay. Bell would connect on two free throws himself at the two second mark to make the final score, 77-73, in favor of Campbell.
Players of the Game
Romeo Crouch led the team with 16 points, which included four three-pointers. Adam Flagler and JC Younger recorded 15 points apiece with Davon Bell posting 11. Bell also led the team in rebounds with six and assists with seven. Andrew Eudy led Campbell with 30 points, followed by 26 from Chris Clemons. Eudy also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Stats of the Game
In a first half of runs, PC shot 45% and lived off the three, with eight of its 13 made shots in the opening 20 minutes three-pointers. Campbell shot 47%, hitting just three threes in the half, resulting in a 20-8 margin in points in the paint. The Camels shot better in the second half with a 58% to 46% advantage over PC to finish the game with 51.7% to PC’s 45.3%. Campbell hit six three-pointers, compared to four for PC and finished with nine. PC recorded 12 three-pointers on the evening. Rebounds were tied 30-30, with PC holding an 8-4 edge in turnovers.
