Kernersville, N.C. - The Presbyterian College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Vertcross Invite, hosted by High Point, on Friday afternoon at the Ivey M. Redmond Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C. Sophomore Banner Plumb and senior Sally Hart led their respective teams. Plumb ran the 8k in 28:07.88, placing 77th and leading the men's team to 11th place. Hart placed 33rd in the 5k and led the women's team to 13th place, finishing in 19:36.71.
The top five men all finished the race within 80 seconds of one another. Junior William Wise was close on Plumb's tracks the entire race, finishing eight seconds behind him at 28:15.91 to place 81st. Not far behind were freshman Zack Kochert (89th) and sophomore Neel Taber (96th) who finished the race in 28:35.07 and 28:55.36, respectively. Senior Duncan Gotfredson rounded out the scoring for the Blue Hose, placing 101st with a time of 29:21.03. Freshmen Kieran Schuetterle (30:27.56) and Kiro Morkos (32:53.61) and senior Jake Birdsong (32:54.74) also competed for PC. They placed 112th, 135th, and 136th, respectively. The men's combined team score was 338 points.
Junior Ali Bennett was the second Blue Hose to cross the line in the 5k. She placed 68th with a time of 20:33.61. Freshman Julia Keen finished next with a time of 21:33.88, placing 98th. Junior Denise Devaney (121st) and senior Ripley Fricano (125th) rounded out the top five for PC. They finished in 22:47.73 and 23:17.03, respectively. Also competing for the Blue Hose was sophomore Abigayle Winn who finished 158th with a time of 30:11.41. The women's combined team score was 339 points.
Nadeel Wildschutt of Coastal Carolina won the 8k with a time of 24:10.92. East Tennessee State took home the men's team title with a score of 36 points. High Point's Famke Heinst was the winner of the 5k, finishing in 17:35.02. Appalachian State won the women's team title with a score of 28 points.
PC men's and women's cross country will race at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex again in two weeks for the Big South Championship. Both races will take place on Friday, October 26 with times to be announced.
