Clinton, SC - The Presbyterian College baseball team fell to Longwood, 9-3, on Sunday at the PC Baseball Complex on their senior day. The Lancers exploded for six runs in the sixth inning behind four hits and two errors to regain the lead. PC falls to 15-36 on the year and 8-16 in the Big South, while Longwood improves to 16-34 for the season and 8-16 in Big South play.
How It Happened
In the top of the first, Sammy Mitchell doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a passed ball. A single from Justin Mitchell would put the Lancers up 1-0.
Longwood would push the lead to two with a solo home run from Eric Crain in the top of the second.
Nick Wise singled to lead off the bottom of the second. A perfectly executed hit and run with TJ Richardson put runners at the corners with no outs. A sac fly from Andrew Bladt would bring Wise home and cut into the Lancer lead. A two-out single from Jonathan White appeared to tie the game, but the junior was tagged out attempting to stretch it into a double before Richardson tagged home. The inning ended with the visitors leading 2-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jack McLaughlin doubled and advanced to third on a failed pick off attempt. AJ Priaulx then tied the game at 2-2 with a sac fly to center field that scored McLaughlin.
In the bottom of the fifth, McLaughlin singled and advanced to second on a ground out by Priaulx. A two-out single from Colton Chapman scored the run and gave PC its first lead of the day at 3-2.
In the top of the sixth, Jake Jansen came in to pinch run for Mac McCafferty who reached on a hit-by-pitch. Crain doubled to advance him to third. An error by the second baseman allowed Antwaun Tucker to reach and a run to score and tie the game at 3-3. Tucker then stole second and advanced to third, as a run scored, on an errant throw from the catcher. Scott Carter then reached and drove in a run with a squeeze bunt to make it 5-2. Mitchell then drove in another with a single to left center. A two-run single from Blakeney capped a six-run inning for the visitors and made it 8-3.
In the top of the seventh, Tucker singled and reached third off a pair of stolen bases. An RBI single from Mendez would then push the Lancer lead to 9-3.
The Blue Hose would start a rally with a pair of singles from White and Nick Guimbarda in the bottom of the ninth, but Tommy Green picked up his fifth strikeout of the game to end the game.
Pitchers of Record
Jackson Dean (0-4) took the loss for PC after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and striking out four over 5.1 innings.
Tommy Green (2-1) picked up the win for Longwood after throwing 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball. The freshman allowed two hits and struck out five batters.
PC will travel to play No. 16 ranked Georgia on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
