ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball scored nine runs over the last three innings to withstand a late push by UNC Asheville and hold on to pick up a 12-7 victory at Greenwood Field on Friday. The Blue Hose improve to 11-21 overall and 5-5 in the Big South, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-21 and 4-6 in Big South play.
How It Happened
In the top of the first, Andrew Bladt singled up the middle to put a runner on base for AJ Priaulx. The senior outfielder delivered with a two-run shot to right field, his 5th long ball and 54th hit of the year, to make it 2-0. Tannor Byrd extended the PC lead in the fourth with a single down the leftfield line that scored TJ Richardson to make it 3-0.
UNC Asheville was able to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Bulldogs only managed one run on a sacrifice fly by Chris Troost, making the score 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cody Wilson and Tyler Serricchio drew two-out walks to give the Bulldogs life yet again. Danny Wilson singled to left center and cut the Blue Hose lead to 3-2. However, Chock kept PC in the lead by pitching out of the jam.
In the top of the seventh, Priaulx stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered yet again, this time driving in Guimbarda with a single to right. A wild pitch then brought Bladt home and advanced the runners. Richardson gave PC a five run lead, 7-2, with a two-RBI single up the middle.
The Bulldogs replied with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Wilson started the scoring with an RBI single, Serricchio drove in one with a groundout, Joe Zayatz had a two-run double, and Carmine Pagano tied the game with an RBI single.
In the top of the eighth, PC scored four runs on four hits. Byrd and Guimbarda singled to put runners on the corners. Bladt doubled down the left field line to score one, and White singled to left center to score two more. Nick Wise would make it 11-7 with a sac fly to score White.
White recorded his third hit and third RBI in as many innings by singling in the ninth to bring in Thatcher Coleman and make the score 12-7.
Pitchers of Record
Eric Miles (6-3) picked up the win for PC out of the bullpen. He did not allow a hit and had two strikeouts against one walk over 1.1 innings. The victory will keep him atop the Big South rankings for victories this season.
Jordan Fulbright (1-4) took the loss for the Bulldogs. He gave up four runs on four hits and recorded one out.
The Blue Hose have recorded a home run in six consecutive games.
Jonathan White has recorded at least two hits in six straight games. The junior infielder has 14 multi-hit games this season.
AJ Priaulx extended his hit streak to seven games and is tied with White at 14 multi-hit games this season.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
