ROCK HILL, SC – The Presbyterian College baseball team lost a high-scoring game to Winthrop by a score of 15-9 on Friday night. Nick Guimbarda went 3-for-5 with a home run to lead the Blue Hose. PC falls to 5-14 overall and 0-1 in the Big South, while Winthrop improves to 6-13 and 1-0 in the Big South.
How It Happened
The game started slowly, with both teams recording two hits in the first inning. Winthrop struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Cale Gibson that scored Matthew Mulkey.
The bats came to life for PC in the top of the third inning. The Blue Hose batted around and scored seven runs on six hits. Nick Guimarda led off the inning with a solo shot to right field that tied the game at 1-1. PC would add RBI from Nick Wise and Guy Casaceli to take a 3-1 lead. Then, Tannor Byrd hit a three-run homer to left field to extend PC’s lead to 6-1. Guimbarda then singled to record his second hit of the inning and advance Rob Greco to third. PC took a 7-1 lead off a wild pitch that scored Greco.
Winthrop cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Mulkey recorded an RBI double, and Mitch Spires had an RBI triple that made the score 7-5. The Eagles would add another run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.
The Eagles exploded with nine runs off six hits in the seventh inning. Mulkey and Gibson hit homeruns, and Winthrop took a 15-7 lead.
Pitchers of Record
Will Smith (0-2) took the loss for PC, giving up seven runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Riley Arnone (1-1) picked up the win for Winthrop, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out five batters over 3.0 innings of relief work.
Game two is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
