The Presbyterian College softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut into a nine-run Blue Raider lead, but it would not be enough as Middle Tennessee survived for the 10-6 win in the final game of the Osprey/Jacksonville Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. Chelsea Lyons led PC with three hits and two RBI.
MTSU 10, PC 6
Middle Tennessee State got on the board first with two runs in first, those coming off a sacrifice fly by Lexi Cushing and a RBI single from Claire Smith. The Blue Raiders added a third in the second with a sacrifice fly from Summer Burgess. PC rallied with a run in the third off a RBI single from Chelsea Lyons that brought home Alexis Edgerton, who led off the inning with a single. MTSU responded with a RBI single from Cushing in top of the fifth to take the 4-1 lead. Four straight singles to open the sixth helped the Blue Raiders load the bases. Precious Birdsong followed with an inside the park home run to clear the bases and propel MTSU to the 8-1 lead. A PC error and a Birdsong RBI single made it a 10-1 lead in the top of the seventh.
The Blue Hose racked up eight singles in the bottom of the seventh inning in a five run rally that saw PC cut the margin to four, 10-6. A MTSU error gave PC on run, with a RBI single from Jonnie Petree bringing in the second. Lyons, Camryn Alverson, and Megan Anderson followed with RBI singles as well to give PC five runs in the frame. That would be as close as the Blue Hose would get with the final out coming off a groundout to give MTSU the 10-6 win.
Lyons led PC on offense, going three-for-four with two RBI. Macy Hyatt and Ansley Wilbanks added two hits, while Petree, Alverson, Anderson, Lindsay Harris, and Edgerton added a hit apiece as well. Leading MTSU was Birdsong, with her four-for-four effort and five RBI. Burgess added three hits and one RBI, with Dani Munoz and Kirstyn Cuccia posting two hits apiece. Kaylee Allen (0-8) threw a complete game for PC, surrendering eight earned runs off 16 hits, with three strikeouts. Baldwin (5-2) went 3.0 innings, giving up three hits and one run, with three strikeouts.
PC finished with six runs, 13 hits, and two errors, while MTSU posted 10 runs, 16 hits, and three errors.
For the Record
PC drops to 1-16 overall, while MTSU improves to 15-6.
The Blue Hose head to Georgia State Wednesday, Mar. 7, for a 5 p.m., contest.
