Megan Anderson’s three-RBI double in the top of the eighth snapped a 5-5 tie and gave the Presbyterian College softball team the extra-inning, 10-5, win over Iona in its second game of the Cougar Classic, held Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Patriot’s Point Athletic Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. A lone run by DePaul in the third inning was enough for the Blue Demons to edge the Blue Hose, 1-0, in Saturday’s first game.
DPU 1, PC 0
Both pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in a game that saw just six total hits. Pat Moore moved to 3-1 on the year after surrendering just two hits and no walks, while striking out nine, in the shutout. Kaylee Allen dropped to 0-4 despite giving up just one run and one walk off four hits, with seven strikeouts.
After two one-two-three innings to open the game DePaul put up the only run of the game in the top of the third off a RBI single from Angela Scalzitti. Courtney White led off the bottom of the frame with a single but DePaul retired the next three to kill the potential rally. Macy Hyatt provided the other hit for PC with a single in the bottom of the fourth. Maranda Gutierrez led DePaul in hits with two on the afternoon.
PC 10, Iona 5 (8)
Megan Anderson put the Blue Hose up in the top of the first with a RBI double that brought home Jonnie Petree. The lead was short-lived as Ciarra DiGuilio hit a three-run home run in the second inning, which was followed by a Jasmine Temple RBI single, to put Iona ahead 4-1 after the first inning. Marisa Gergel added a fifth run for the Gaels in the bottom of the second with a RBI double.
PC rallied with four runs in the top of the fifth, with Petree, who was on base off a walk, scoring off an Iona error. Macy Hyatt plated a run with a RBI single the next at-bat, while another Gael error allowed Hyatt and Hailey Caswell to both score to tie the game at 5-5.
In the top of the eighth, and with runners on second and third, Anderson came through again with a three-run double to put the Blue Hose up 8-5. She scored the next at-bat with a two-run homer from Lindsay Harris, to propel the Blue Hose to the 10-5 extra-inning win.
Anderson led the Blue Hose offense with a three-for-five effort, and four RBI. Harris went two-for-five with two RBI. Petree recorded a career-high five stolen bases. Kimmie Chiapparelli led Iona with two hits, while DiGuilio recorded three RBI.
Jessica Harkness started for the Gaels and went 3.0 innings, giving up just one run off four hits, with five strikeouts. Alana Evans went 4.1 innings for the loss, surrendering six hits and two earned runs, with six strikeouts. Camryn Alverson earned the win for PC, throwing 6.2 innings and giving up just two hits and no runs.
PC finished with 10 runs off 11 hits, with three errors, while Iona posted five runs off eight hits, with four errors.
For the Record
PC improves to 1-6 on the season.
The Blue Hose are home Wednesday, Feb. 21, with a 2 p.m., doubleheader against Furman. It was rescheduled after being postponed Feb. 14, due to poor field conditions.
