Four Blue Hose recorded double-digit kills, including Erin Eulitz with 17, to lead the Presbyterian College volleyball team to the 3-1 win over Liberty in conference action Friday evening in Clinton, S.C. PC took set one 27-25 before dropping set two, 25-15. The Blue Hose rallied back with the 25-18 and 25-23 sets three and four wins.
Scoring the Match
Liberty stormed out to a 10-4 lead in set one, helped by a 4-1 run. The Flames extended the lead to 12-6 before PC fought back to 13-16. It ignited a 4-1 run that saw the home team tie the set at 17-17. A 7-3 run by Liberty gave the Flames their first set point, 24-20, but it was PC with four unanswered, which included back to back kills from Ashton Stewart to knot the set at 24-24. A Victoria Baptista kill made it 25-24, in favor of the visitors, but a Liberty service error and attack error gave PC the set point, 26-25. Stewart followed through with a kill to give the Blue Hose the come-from behind, 27-25, first set win.
Tied at 5-5 in the second set, Liberty rattled off six in a row to jump out to a 12-5 lead. Four straight by PC, which included block assists from Martina Shamley and Stewart, made it a three-point set at 12-9. Liberty rallied with an 8-1 run to extend the lead to 20-10. Liberty went up 22-12 until PC came back with an Erin Eulitz kill and Flame attack error to cut the margin to eight, 22-14. The Flames took the next three of four points to win set two, 25-15.
Liberty rallied back from an early 6-1 deficit to tie the third set at 9-9. PC used a 5-2 run to extend the lead back to three, 14-11. PC extended its lead to 17-13 before three straight by the Flames cut the margin to just one, 16-17. The Blue Hose collected the next eight out of 10 points, including the final five straight, to the set, 25-18.
PC led early in set four, 5-1, but Liberty rallied back to knot the set at 9-9. PC responded with a 5-2 run build a 14-11 lead, extending it to 16-12 before back to back Flame points cut the margin to two 14-16. PC used a 4-2 run to make it 20-16, but four straight from the Flames knotted it at 20-20. A Liberty service error put PC back up by one, but two unanswered gave the Flames the 22-21 lead. A Eulitz kill and Wright service ace put the Blue Hose up again, 23-22, with the Blue Hose taking the next two of three points to take the 25-23 fourth set and match win.
Player of the Match
Erin Eulitz led the team with 17 kills, followed by Caroline Henderson and Ashton Stewart with 13 apiece. Allie Wright recorded 11. Jaclyn Brewington and Sierra Jones each recorded 24 digs, with Daley Gosnell finishing with 14 digs, and three service aces. Anna Gragg led Liberty with 26 kills, with Amaya Williams adding 45 assists.
Stat of the Match
Liberty led in kills, 60-57, but also in errors, 24-16, giving PC the edge in attack percentage, .279-.254. The Blue Hose posted 4.0 blocks, to Liberty’s 7.0. The Blue Hose came away with the 6-1 advantage in service aces.
The 57 team kills ranked tied for 15th in the PC Division I record book in kills in a four set match.
Daley Gosnell tied her career-high with three service aces.
PC played in its 16th four-set match of the season.
For the Record
PC drops to 6-21 overall and 2-10 in the Big South, while Liberty improves to 10-16, 7-6.
