Two sets came down to the wire but it was High Point that came out on top each time to take the 3-0 win over the Presbyterian College volleyball team in Big South action Friday night at Templeton Center. The Panthers won the sets by scores of 25-17, 28-26, and 25-23. Caroline Henderson paced the Blue Hose on offense with 12 kills.
Scoring the Match
High Point started the match strong, opening up a 12-5 lead before PC rattled off three straight, capped by an Ashton Stewart kill, to cut the margin to four, 12-8. A 6-1 run by the Panthers wiped out the rally as HPU extended the lead to eight, 17-9. PC cut into the lead on several more occasions but High Point seemed to have an answer each time, winning set one, 25-17.
The Blue Hose responded in the second set, taking a 6-5 lead, and turning it into a five-point lead, 14-9, off an 8-4 run. PC extended it to six at 17-11, but a 9-3 HPU run tied the set, 20-20. What followed was a back and forth battle, with five ties and both teams reaching set point a couple of times each. Tied 26-26, High Point used a Katie Tylman kill and a Tylman and Jordan Hefner block assist to seal the 28-26 set two win.
A close third set early, PC and HPU were knotted at 14-14, but a 4-1 PC run gave the home team a 17-14 lead. The Blue Hose extended the lead to 21-16, capped by back to back kills from Caroline Henderson and Allie Wright. High Point scored three straight to cut it to 21-19, but a block assist from Wright and Jaclyn Brewington quieted the rally. The Panthers cut the lead to one, 23-22, off back to back kills, taking the lead and reaching match point off two PC attack errors. The Panthers sealed the 25-23 win off a Blue Hose attack error to take the match.
Player of the Match
Offensively Caroline Henderson was tops for PC with 12 kills, followed by Sydney De Jong with nine. Jaclyn Brewington added 18 assists, while Daley Gosnell added 15 digs. Molly Livingston led High Point with 13 kills.
Stat of the Match
Kills were fairly close with HPU leading 48-40. The Panthers posted a .283 attack percentage, compared to .196 for PC. Both teams recorded 5.0 total blocks apiece.
