BALTIMORE, Md. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team took the opening set in two matches on Friday but fell to Loyola and UMBC in four sets on the opening day of the Charm City Challenge in Baltimore, Md.
Scoring the Match
The Blue Hose claimed the opening set, 25-18, thanks to a .355 hitting percentage, converting 15 of the 31 attempts in to kills. With the set sitting at 12-11 in favor of PC, the Blue Hose took control with a 12-5 run over the latter half of the frame. In the second set, Loyola got off to a quick start at 7-3 but PC was able to cut the advantage to two at 17-15. The Greyhounds finished the set on an 8-2 run to take it, 25-17, and even the match at 1-1. The two teams worked a tight set three to a 12-12 tie in early going. The advantage was never more than four but ultimately Loyola came out on top, 25-22. The fourth set proved tight as well with the teams drawing to a 16-16 tie midway through the set. A 5-1 run by Loyola from there gave the Greyhounds enough breathing room to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
PC once again claimed the opening set of the match, 25-20, to take the early advantage. The Blue Hose jumped out to a 10-4 in set one but UMBC was able to pull within two at 15-13. PC extended the lead from there en route to taking the frame 25-20, thanks to a .412 hitting percentage. With set two locked at 12-12, UMBC turned the frame in its favor with a 13-4 run to take it 25-17 and even the match at 1-1. Set three featured runs from besides in a back-and-forth affair. UMBC pulled out to a 12-4 lead but PC used an 8-2 run to cut it to 14-12. UMBC responded with an 8-1 run to pull away but the Blue Hose finished the set strong with a late 5-2 run, despite falling 25-18. The Retrievers then closed out the match by taking the final set, 25-15, for the 3-1 win.
Players of the Matches
Erin Eulitz led the Blue Hose offense on the day, totaling 12 kills and 15 kills in the two matches, respectively. The outside hitter put together a double-double in the second match against UMBC, managing 11 digs, while also hitting .324 for the match.
Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Allie Wright reached 10 kills in both matches, in addition to totaling seven blocks against Loyola. The rookie hit .370 against the Greyhounds, converting 10 of 27 attempts in to kills with no errors.
Daley Gosnell totaled at least 20 digs in each of the two matches to led the Blue Hose defensive effort. The junior recorded a match-high 24 digs against Loyola and a match-high 20 against UMBC.
Stats of the Matches
PC was stellar in the opening set of both matches, totaling 31 kills in 65 attempts with just six errors across the two matches for a .385 hitting percentage. The Blue Hose also set a season-high with 12 blocks against Loyola, topping its previous high of seven against UNCG last weekend.
The Blue Hose wrap up the action at the Charm City Challenge on Saturday with a noon match against Morgan State. Live stats and video will be available for the match.
