LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames struck early on Friday night with seven-run second inning en route to an 8-3 victory over the Presbyterian College baseball team in game two of the series at the Liberty Baseball Stadium. PC falls to 28-27 overall and 14-9 in the Big South, while Liberty improves to 32-20 overall and 16-7 in the Big South.

How It Happened

Liberty got all but one of its runs in the second inning, scoring seven times with two outs. D.J. Artis recorded the first blow of the inning with a three-run home run to center. LU then recorded four straight hits that included an RBI single by Sammy Taormina and an RBI double by Eric Grabowski. After a walk loaded the bases, Will Shepard singled in two more runs to make it a 7-0 lead.

PC cracked through in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Cletis Avery reached on an infield single and later moved to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Weyenberg followed with his third home run of the season, a two-run drive to right, to cut the advantage to 7-2. The Flames got one back in the bottom half of the fifth on a leadoff, solo home run by Payton Scarbrough to make it 8-2.

The Blue Hose got on the board again with a run in the sixth inning. AJ Priaulx started the inning with a leadoff, ground-rule double to right field. Three batters later, Nick Wise doubled to right center to score Priaulx and make it an 8-3 ballgame.

Pitchers of Record

Cody Gamble (3-3) earned the victory in relief, allowing one run in three hits in 1.2 innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

Tanner Chock (3-6) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings with a strikeout against three walks.

Player of the Game

Tyler Weyenberg went 2-for-4 with the homer, a run and two RBIs on the night. The senior entered 2017 with just three career home runs and now has three home runs just this season. It was the 12th multi-hit game of the season for Weyenberg, one of eight PC players with at least 10 this season.

Notables

- Nick Wise had another solid night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. He is now 4-for-8 with two extra-base hits and two RBIs in the series.

- Cletis Avery went 2-for-4 with a run to record his 11th multi-hit game of the season. The bottom three hitters in the PC order – Wise, Avery and Weyenberg – combined to go 6-for-12 with two runs and three RBIs on the night.

PC concludes the regular season on Saturday against the Flames at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Baseball Stadium. With Liberty and Winthrop both winning on Friday night, the Blue Hose are now guaranteed to be the No. 3 seed in next week's Big South Tournament. PC will look to play the spoiler on Saturday, as LU needs a win and a Winthrop loss to claim the Big South Regular Season title outright.
