Jessica Smith used a two-run home run in the second inning to lead Longwood to the 2-0 win over the Presbyterian College softball team in game one of a Big South doubleheader Friday in Farmville, Va. Kaylee Allen and Alex Cook combined for seven shutout innings to lead the Blue Hose to the 2-0 win in game two.

Scoring the Games
A pitching duel in game one, there were just five combined hits, Smith’s two-run home run in the second inning producing the only runs of the game.

PC struck in the second inning with a Jonnie Petree RBI bunt to bring home Rebekka Gross, who was on base off a Longwood error. The Blue Hose loaded the bases in the sixth off a hit by pitch, a single, and a Lancer error. Hope Rogers brought the game’s second run in off a sacrifice fly to give PC the 2-0 lead.

Players of the Games
PC recorded one hit in game one, with Gross picking up her fifth double of the season in the top of the second inning. Kaylynn Batten led Longwood in hits with two, with Smith pacing the team with two RBI.

In game one Katie Brown (6-12) went three innings, surrendering two runs off four hits, while Cook pitched in relief for three innings, giving up no hits and striking out two. Elizabeth McCarthy earned the win (6-6), going 7.0 innings and striking out seven while giving up just one hit.

Leading the Blue Hose in game two was Petree with three hits and one RBI. Gross added two hits as well. Collecting hits for Longwood were Justina Augustine and Glenn Walters with one apiece.

Allen started for PC (4-4) and went 5.0 innings, giving up no runs off two hits. Cook came in relief for 2.0 innings, and didn’t allow a run or hit for her fifth save of the season. Sydney Gay (10-12) went 7.0 innings, surrendering two runs off seven hits, with six strikeouts.

Final Lines
In game one, PC recorded no runs off one hit, with no errors, while Longwood posted two runs off four hits, and one error.

Game two saw PC with two runs off seven hits and two errors. The Lancers had two hits and four errors, and no runs.

For the Record
PC moves to 15-28 overall and 4-10 in the league, while Longwood goes to 16-22, 5-6.
