Julia DiMartino struck out 12 en route to a Liberty 4-0 win over the Presbyterian College softball team in game one of a Big South doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. The Flames used a five-run fifth inning to take game two, 8-0, in five innings.
Scoring the Games
After two and a half scoreless innings in game one Liberty opened the bottom of the third with a Deidra See single. After advancing to second and third off a sacrifice bunt and a Jasmeen Click single, Tori Savodny tripled to left, sending the first two runs across the plate. Zavodny scored the next at bat off a PC error to give the Flames the 3-0 lead. Amber Bishop’s RBI single in the fifth gave the Flames the final 4-0 score.
Alexia Taylor opened the bottom of the second inning of game two with a double to right. She scored the next at-bat off an Emily Sweat bunt single to second to give Liberty the early 1-0 lead. The fourth inning saw Sweat draw a four-pitch walk with one out on the board. See brought her home two batters later with a two-run home run to left, and the Flames took a 3-0 lead. A two-RBI double by Sarah Robertson and a RBI single from Taylor in the bottom of the fifth bumped the Liberty lead to 6-0. The game ended two batters later off a two-run home run from Jaclyn Amader to give the Flames the 8-0 win (five innings).
Players of the Games
Four Blue Hose recorded hits in game one, with Kelsie Sanchez collecting her first triple of the season. Rebekka Gross hit her fourth double of the season as well. Alex Cook (4-10) pitched a complete game for PC, giving up four runs off seven hits, with four strikeouts.
Zavodny led Liberty in game one with two hits and two RBI, with Bishop finishing with two RBI as well. See recorded two hits off three at-bats. DiMartino (9-6) earned the win for the Flames, striking out 12 and surrendering four hits in the shutout.
Taylor recorded two hits to lead Liberty in game two, with Robertson, Amader, and See each recording a team-leading two RBI. Friesen (10-1) went 5.0 innings and struck out four, while giving up three hits and no runs.
PC finished game one with no runs off four hits and one error in game one. The Blue Hose stranded nine runners. Liberty posted four runs off seven hits with two errors. The Flames left four on base.
In game two the Blue Hose finished with no runs off three hits and one error. They left four on base. The Flames had eight runs off eight hits and no errors, while stranding two runners.
For the Record
PC drops to 14-27 overall and 3-9 in the league, while Liberty improves to 26-16, 10-2.
PC heads to Longwood April 14-15, for a three-game series, with a single game at 5 p.m., Friday and a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
