Blaire Miller went three-for-four with a the RBI, a double, and a homerun, to lead the Presbyterian College softball team to the 10-2 win over Delaware state in Saturday action at the Eagle Classic, being held Mar. 3-5, in Statesboro, Ga. PC recorded its season-high 10 runs off a season-high 12 hits.
Blue Hose Players of the Game
Leading the offense was Blaire Miller with her three hits and three RBI. Hope Rogers posted three hits as well. Jonnie Ptree has two hits, while Rebekka Gross, Kelsie Sanchez, Jenna Harris, and Lindsay Harris each recorded a hit apiece. Sanchez paced the team in runs with two.
Defensively, Miller led the team with seven putouts, with Young and Rogers tops in assists with three.
PC finished with 10 runs off 12 hits, with one error, while Delaware State posted two runs off five hits, and had five errors.
Katie Brown picked up the win (5-4), going 4.2 innings and giving up two runs and five hits, with two strikeouts. Alex Cook came in relief for 2.1 innings. She struck out one and gave up no hits and no runs.
Hannah Shields went 3.0 innings in the loss (0-2) and gave up four hits and five runs, only one earned, with three strikeouts. Jessica Shalongo pitched 4.0 innings and surrendered five runs and eight hits, with four strikeouts.
Scoring the Game
Delaware State scored first with a RBI double by Desiree Moreno, which scored Jasmine Melgoza, who had led off the game with a double. PC responded in the second with a lead-off walk from Megan Anderson. After she advanced to third off a DSU error, she scored when Blaire Miller doubled to right. Jenna Harris singled to short the next at-bat, driving home Kylie Young, who was on off a fielder’s choice, to give PC the 2-1 lead. Jonnie Petree singled up the middle next, with Harris scoring off another error. Madison Longanecker, who was on base off a fielder’s choice, scored PC’s fourth run off an error made when Petree stole second the next play.
It became a 5-1 game in the top of the third when Young came across the plate on a Hornet fielding error, and a 6-1 game when Petree, who was on base off a single, stole second, stole third, and scored on DSU’s fifth error of the game.
Delaware State added a second run in the bottom of the fifth with Moreno singling up the middle, sending home Danielle Velez, who was on second off a double the previous at bat. With her second home run of the season Blaire Miller took the Blue Hose back up by five, 7-2, with a solo shot to left in the top of the sixth
Rebekka Gross led off the seventh inning with a double and after advancing to second off a Hope Rogers’ single, she scored off an Ashlyn Durham sacrifice hit. Rogers scored PC’s ninth run off a Kylie Young RBI ground out, with Kelsie Sanchex, who was on off a single to third, made it 10-2 off a Miller RBI single. A quiet bottom of the seventh gave PC the final 10-2 win.
