Gardner-Webb avenged a 3-0 loss to the Presbyterian College volleyball team earlier in the season with a 3-0 win over the Blue Hose Saturday evening at the Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. The Runnin’ Bulldogs took the sets by scores of 25-17, 25-23, and 25-18.


Set by Set
PC opened the first set with a 4-1 lead, but Gardner-Web chipped away at the lead, taking the eventual 8-7 margin off a PC ball handling error. A Sara Rogers’ kill tied it at 8-8 before both teams traded points with the last tie coming at 10-10. The Runnin’ Bulldogs responded with a 7-1 run to make it 17-11. The Blue Hose cut the margin to four at 18-14 but scored just three more as GWU took the first set off a 7-3 run, winning 25-17.

A close second set, PC and GWU were tied for the seventh time at 13-13. Back to back kills from Martina Shamley and Samantha Del Toro ignited a 4-0 run to give PC a 17-13 lead. Gardner-Webb rallied to tie the set at 19-19, capped by a Nicole Celarek kill. A back and forth battle ensued with ties coming at 21, and again at 23. Kaelyn Dyson closed out the set with two straight kills to give Gardner-Webb the tight 25-23 second set win.

Gardner-Webb opened up a 7-3 lead in the third set before PC rallied with four unanswered, helped by kills from Shamley, Del Toro and Sierra Davis, to tie it up at 7-7. Tied again at 8-8, GWU scored three straight to build an 11-8 lead. Trailing 13-9, PC posted three in a row to cut it to one, 13-12. Gardner-Webb responded with a 6-1 run to build a 19-13 lead. PC cut it to three at 21-18 off kills from Davis and Shamley, before GWU took the final four, including back to back kills from Celarek, to take the set and match win, 25-18.

Players of the Match
Leading the Blue Hose was Samantha Del Toro with nine kills, followed by eight from Sierra Davis. Mikayla Register posted 19 digs, with Jaclyn Brewington adding 16 assists and two service aces.

Nicole Celarek recorded 11 kills for GWU, with Kaelyn Dyson adding 10. Amanda Sahm had 14 assists, while she and Emma Milstead added 13 digs apiece.

Stats of the Match
Stats were fairly even with GWU holding a 39-33 advantage in kills, a .177-.117 edge in hitting percentage and had two fewer errors, 17-19. The Runnin’ Bulldogs led in blocks, 8-4, and assists, 35-32. PC posted s 62-59 advantage in digs.

Record
PC drops to 4-21 overall and 2-8 in the league, while Gardner-Webb improves to 12-15, 2-10.
