CONWAY, S.C. – The 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (26-10, 10-1 Big South) used a pair of solo home run in the eighth inning for the comeback 4-2 victory over the Presbyterian College baseball team (18-16, 5-6 Big South) on Saturday afternoon at Springs Brook Stadium in Conway, S.C.
Tyler Weyenberg led the Blue Hose at the plate, reaching in all four plate appearances with two singles and two walks. AJ Priaulx was 2-for-4 with a run, while Nick Guimbarda and Rob Koski each recorded a single.
Mike Morrison (5-0) earned the win in relief, going 1.2 innings of hitless baseball with no walks against three strikeouts. Colton Springs (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and strikeout in 0.1 innings pitched.
PC starter Tanner Chock turned in one of his best outings of the year, going 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts against one walk. Coastal Carolina starter Bobby Holmes went 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with two walks against six strikeouts.
PC scored first with a run in the top of the second. Johnson drew a walk to lead off the inning and two batters later Priaulx singled to right to move him to third. Priaulx later stole second, drawing the attention of the defense to allow Johnson to sneak in ahead of the throw at home on the double steal to give PC the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Hose added a run with two outs in the fourth. Priaulx singled with two outs and Rob Koski followed with a single to put two on with two out. Nick Guimbarda then made it three straight singles with a hit through the right side to drive in Priaulx from second make it a 2-0 PC lead.
Coastal Carolina got on the board in the fifth with a solo home run to right from Seth Lancaster, cutting the lead to 2-1. Chock had retired nine straight batters before the solo homer and had faced just two above the minimum to that point.
The Chanticleers tied the game with a single run in the seventh. After a strikeout, Billy Cooke doubled to left to put a runner on second and chase Chock from the game. Aaron Lesiak came on and got a groundout to second for the second out with Cooke moving to third. Matt Beaird followed with a RBI single to plate Cooke and tie it at 2-2.
Coastal Carolina then took the lead in the eighth with a pair of solo home runs to right. GK Young led off the inning with his ninth homer of the year and Connor Owings followed two batters later with his seventh. The Chanticleers have hit five home runs in the series through two games, all of which have been solo home runs hit to right field.
Cooke led the Chanticleers at the plate with a 2-for-4 day with a double and a run. Young, Owings and Lancaster each hit solo homers to account for the other three Chanticleer runs.
The two will wrap up the series on Sunday at 2 p.m., as the Blue Hose look to avoid the sweep. PC has not been sweep in any weekend series this season.
