CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team used 12 hits and five Winthrop errors to take down the Eagles, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep. The Blue Hose improve to 18-13 overall and 5-4 in the Big South with their fourth straight win.
Rob Koski led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Weston Jackson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Cletis Avery was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jacob Midkiff added two hits and two runs with Ryan Hedrick and Peter Johnson each contributing a hit, a run and an RBI.
David Sauer (3-2) earned the victory in his first weekend start of the season, going 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout and two walks. Thad Harris (2-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with a walk against three strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.
The PC bullpen was flawless, as three relievers combined 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball with three hits and no walks with a pair of strikeouts. Russell Thompson went 0.2 innings to get out of a jam in the 7th, while Colton Springs and Cole Norwood each threw a scoreless inning to close it out.
Winthrop took the lead with three early runs, two in second and one in the third. An RBI single by Anthony Paulsen and an RBI double by Casey Parker plated the Eagles’ two runs in the second. Mark Lowrie then had an RBI groundout to second to drive in Tyler Asbill, who led off the inning with a double, to give WU the 3-0 lead.
PC would get things started with a run in the fifth. Midkiff singled to lead off the inning and later moved to second on a wild pitch with one out. Koski then doubled over the head of the right fielder to score Midkiff from second and cut the Eagles’ lead to 3-1.
The Blue Hose then broke it open with four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Avery singled with one out to start things in the sixth and Jackson followed with a double down the left-field line to put runners on second and third. Johnson singled to left to drive in Avery but Jackson was doubled off at third, 7-4-5 for the second out.
After Midkiff singled to put two on, Hedrick followed with an RBI single to right to score Johnson. Midkiff would then come home as the ball got away from the catcher, which allowed Hedrick to go to third and moving to second on the throw home. Koski then singled up the middle to drive in Hedrick and make it 5-3 PC advantage.
In the sixth, Colton Chapman drew a leadoff walk and Glen Casaceli came on to pinch run. Weyenberg then singled to third on a bunt, moving Casaceli to second, before a misthrow to first base allowed both runners to advance ninety feet. Casaceli would then find home plate unoccupied by a fielder and would come on to score on an errant throw on the advancement.
The Blue Hose would keep it going as Avery followed with an RBI double to score Weyenberg and Jackson singled up the middle to drive in Avery. Two batters later, with Jackson going from second, Midkiff grounded out to second and Jackson was able to score on the play to make it a 9-3 lead.
Paulsen was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the Eagles, while Parker had two hits and an RBI and Asbill had two hits and a run.
It was the second sweep of the year for the Blue Hose and the first in a conference series. It was the first Big South sweep for PC since sweeping UNC Asheville at home last season.
