CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College rolled over Winthrop, 77-44, Saturday at the Templeton Center. PC swept the season series against Winthrop for the first time in program history.
The Blue Hose improved to 16-11, 12-6 in the Big South Conference, while Winthrop fell to 4-23, 3-15 on the season. PC heads out on the road for a 7 p.m. matchup against Radford on Tuesday in Radford, Va. that will be on ESPN 3.
Taylor Petty (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Janie Miles (Clemson, S.C.) led all scorers with 15 points each, while Miles added six rebounds and two assists. Yakima Clifton (Durham, N.C.) led PC in rebounds for the first time in her career with eight, while Cortney Storey (Fayetteville, Tenn.) dished seven assists, which tied a season high.
The Blue Hose knocked down 11 3-pointers which tied for third-most three’s made in a single game in Division I history and the most points scored since an 82-point performance against High Point on December 29 earlier this season.
Arianne Whitaker led Winthrop with 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Naima Jackson added nine points.
Storey opened the game on a made layup on PC’s first possession, as the Blue Hose opened an 11-4 to start the game. PC then went on an 8-0 run and extended the lead to 19-6. Arianne Whitaker closed the first quarter with a made layup, while the Blue Hose led 19-8 after the first. Petty set the tone for PC with three 3-pointers in the quarter.
The Blue Hose started the second quarter on a 7-4 run and pulled out to a 26-12 lead on Rebecca Walker’s (Snellville, Ga.) made jumper. Winthrop closed the gap to 26-16 before Petty knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and extended the PC lead to 32-18. The Eagles again closed the lead to 10, 32-22, before the Blue Hose ended the half on an 11-1 run. Miles converted a 3-pointer and gave PC a 43-25 lead into the locker room.
PC went on an 8-0 run in the third and opened up a 58-31 lead. The Eagles ended the third quarter on a 4-0 run, while the Blue Hose led 62-37 into the final quarter.
The Blue Hose started the final quarter on a 6-2 run and opened a 68-39 lead. PC closed the game on a 9-0 run with points from four different players.
PC shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free throw line in the game. 11 different Blue Hose players scored in the game.
