CLINTON, S.C. – Rebecca Walker led the Presbyterian College women’s basketball team with a career-high 18 points in a 60-42 win over Big South Conference favorite Liberty Saturday at the Templeton Center. It was the first time a Big South opponent beat Liberty by double digits since a 77-54 loss at Radford on March 3, 2007.
The Blue Hose improved to 8-7, 4-2 in the Big South, while the Flames fell to 7-8, 4-2 on the season. PC hits the road for a 7 p.m. showdown at Winthrop on Tuesday.
Walker (Snellville, Ga.) led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Cortney Storey (Fayetteville, Tenn.) provided 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Janie Miles (Clemson, S.C.) added 12 points, three assists and three rebounds.
Jaymee Fisher-Davis led the Flames with 15 points and five three-pointers, while Mickayla Sanders added nine points, four assists and four rebounds. Katelyn Adams pulled down 12 rebounds and produced five points.
The Flames opened the game on a 5-0 run, their largest lead of the game, before Walker buried a three-pointer and cut the lead to two. Taylor Petty (Spartanburg, S.C.) converted a layup and tied the game at 8-8 at the 5:31 mark. Storey ended the first quarter with a made layup and free throw that gave the Blue Hose a 13-12 lead after the period.
The Blue Hose opened the second half on an 11-3 run and took a 24-15 lead off Storey’s three-pointer. Walker ended the quarter with a made layup and gave PC a 30-20 lead at the end of the first half. The Blue Hose held Liberty to eight points in the second period, Fisher-Davis provided six.
Liberty collected 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, while the Blue Hose limited them to just four second chance points. The Blue Hose shot 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor and held the Flames to 25 percent (8-of-32) shooting in the first half.
PC opened the second half on a 7-2 run and broke out to a 37-22 lead before Fisher-Davis knocked down a three-pointer. The Blue Hose then went on another 7-2 run when Aianna Kelly (Newport News, Va.) sank a three-pointer and gave PC a 41-26 lead, its largest of the game. Kelly ended the third quarter with another three-pointer that gave the Blue Hose a 47-31 lead into the final period.
The Flames started the final quarter on a 10-3 run and cut the PC lead to 50-41 with 6:26 left in the game. The Blue Hose responded with a 7-0 run and pushed the lead back to 56-41 with 2:36 remaining. Allie Wagner (Easley, S.C.) ended the game with five straight points.
The Blue Hose limited Liberty to five offensive rebounds and one second chance point in the second half.
PC held the lead for 32 minutes and 54 seconds in the game, while they shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor. The Blue Hose held a 13-5 turnover and a 14-5 points off turnovers advantage in the game.
