FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team picked up its first Big South Conference win of the season, 59-38, over Longwood University Saturday at Willett Hall. Allie Wagner provided PC with her second career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Blue Hose went to 3-5, 1-1 in the Big South, while the Lancers fell to 1-6, 0-2 on the season. PC caused 21 turnovers, took 11 steals and owned a 26-12 points in the paint advantage.
Janie Miles hit a 3-pointer to give PC its first lead of the game, 5-4, at the 6:44 marker of the first quarter. The Lancers then went on a 5-0 run and took a 9-5 lead, their largest of the game. Cortney Storey converted a layup with 3:27 left in the quarter, the last bucket of the period. Longwood took a 9-7 lead after the first.
PC went on an 8-0 run to open the second quarter before Raven Williams connected on a layup that gave the Blue Hose a 15-11 lead. The Blue Hose then went on a 10-3 run after Aianna Kelly sank a 3-pointer and extended the lead to 25-14, PC’s largest of the first half. The Blue Hose outscored Longwood 20-10 in the second quarter and took a 27-19 lead into the locker room.
PC converted on 4-of-6 free-throws in the third quarter, while Taylor Petty connected on a shot from deep and Salina Virola converted a layup. The Blue Hose held Longwood to 21.4 percent (3-of-14) shooting in the third period and took a 36-27 lead into the final period.
Wagner scored nine of her 14 points in the final quarter. She converted four layups and went 1-for-1 from the free-throw line in the period. PC opened a 14-3 run in the fourth quarter and took a 20-point lead. Wagner converted an and-one opportunity and extended the lead to, 32-55. PC’s largest of the game.
Taylor Petty tied the team-lead with 14 points, while Cortney Storey provided 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Presbyterian returns home to host Columbia College on Education Day at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 16.
