CARY, N.C. – Presbyterian College men’s tennis players Ben Kelley and Joel Roberts advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play over the weekend at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. Danny Bruce highlighted the singles play with a 3-1 record in the fall tournament.
“This weekend was a good step for our team,” said PC head coach Adam Herendeen. “This is the biggest tournament in our region so to have Ben and Joel playing in the final eight shows the progress that we have made so far this fall. Danny also played some of his best tennis and had three very good wins. We are eager to get back to work and to see how much we can improve before our last tournament of the fall down in Charleston.”
Kelley and Roberts opened play on Friday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Duke’s Andrew Dejoy and Jason Lapidus. The pair then defeated North Carolina’s Andrew Gores and Jack Murray in the second round on Saturday, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to Sunday’s third round.
Kelley and Roberts battled their way to a tough 7-5, 6-4 victory over UNC Wilmington’s Santtu Leskinen and Christian Van der Burgh on Sunday, advancing to Monday’s quarterfinal round. They would face the No. 41 doubles pair nationally in Monday’s match, N.C. State’s Ian Dempster and Nick Horton.
Dempster and Horton would claim set one of the match, 7-5, but Kelley and Roberts rallied to take the second set, 7-5, to force the deciding match tiebreaker set. Dempter and Horton would prevail, edging out Kelley and Roberts, 10-8, in the final set.
On the singles side, Bruce dropped his opening match on Friday to Coastal Carolina’s Rick Timmerman, 3-6, 5-7, but rebounded to win his next three matches on the weekend. He defeated Davidson’s Shamael Chaudhry, 6-2, 6-2, on Saturday. He then knocked off NC State’s Ian Dempster, 7-5, 7-5, on Sunday morning, before wrapping up tournament play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Coastal Carolina’s Pedro Leme later that day.
The Blue Hose men’s tennis team will conclude its fall schedule at the College of Charleston Invitational on Nov. 13-15.
