PC Women's Soccer Gets First Victory of the Season
SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Presbyterian College women’s soccer team earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate at County University Stadium in Spartanburg.
Freshman Frances Whitesides (Lancaster, S.C./Lancaster H.S.) earned her first career goal in the 77th minute of the game when the Spartan’s goalkeeper, Ellen Bright, left the goal prematurely to make a defensive stop, leaving the goal wide open for Whitesides to score.
The score was held to 0-0 through the first half, each team registering 5 shots each, while PC was on the low side of corner kicks, 4-1. Blue Hose goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas/James Bowie H.S.) had two saves in the first half and USC Upstate’s Bright had three. The score remained 0-0 until Whitesides scored during the final stretch of the game.
Fontenot earned her third career shutout, recording three saves in goal for the Blue Hose. Bright was tacked with the loss, making three saves, but giving up the lone goal for the Spartans.
The Blue Hose will return home on Friday Sept. 5 for the first home match of the season against Furman at Martin Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
