Men's Tennis Knocks Off USC Upstate, 5-2

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team used singles play to down the visiting USC Upstate Spartans on Wednesday, winning 5-2 at Templeton Tennis Courts.

PC improves to 5-1 on the year and will travel to Davidson on Saturday to play Richmond and Davidson, beginning at noon.

The win marks PC’s first over USC Upstate since moving to Division I.

After Upstate captured the doubles point despite a top-flight win from Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) and Ryan Miller (Norcross, Ga.), the Blue Hose took five singles matches to win the day.

Mills rolled past Matthias Kidler at the top flight, 6-4, 6-2, while Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) trumped Gonzalo Blanco at the second flight, 6-3, 6-4.

Joel Roberts (Summerville, S.C.) dropped the first set to Ramon Simonetti but responded with two straight set victories to emerge victorious, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

At the sixth flight, Diego Manzanas (Madrid, Spain) cruised past Rajanvir Dharni in a 6-1, 6-1 result. Ben Kelley (Weaverville, N.C.) rounded out the PC wins with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 tiebreaker thriller.

Yvon Haessig won Upstate’s only singles match, needing three sets to squeeze past Miller at the fifth flight, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
