Basketball Opens Season Friday at Georgia Tech

The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 season Friday, Nov. 8, in Atlanta, Ga., against Georgia Tech.  Tip-off against the Yellow Jackets is set for 7:30 p.m., and will air live on ESPN3.

The Yellow Jackets own an 8-0 mark over the Blue Jackets and have won by an average of 13.88 points.  The closest margin was a 61-64 loss Dec. 17, 1980 - four meetings ago.  The first meeting was an 89-84 over- time win for Georgia Tech Jan. 24, 1975.

Last season, the Blue Hose opened up a 20-16 lead in the first half before settling on the 25-24 margin at halftime.  The upset was not to be as the Yellow Jackets used a 18-0 run early in the second to retake the lead and pull away for the 52-38 win.

The Blue Hose are on the road for their next game as well, as they travel down to Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel in an 8 p.m. game.

The Blue Hose enter the 2013-14 season with huge gaps to fill with the departure of PC’s Division I leader in scoring in Khalid Mutakabbir ... He led the team in scoring with 15.7 and contributed to a quarter of the team’s points (501 of 1,987 points)  ...

60.3% of the 1,987 total points scored last season were from the Khalid Mutakabbir, Joshua Clyburn, Ryan McTavish and Eric Washington, the four starters no longer at PC  ... Clyburn was the team’s leading rebounder as well with 5.8 a game ...

Jordan Downing, who was second on the team in scoring with 12.8 ppg, will rely heavily on William Truss (6.8 ppg) and five freshman that have joined the Blue Hose program ...

Only three current Blue Hose have ever started a game at PC, for a total of 58 games ... Jordan Downing started in 28 last season, while William Truss has tallied 20 in two seasons ... Austin Anderson rounds out the three with 10 starts in 2012 ...

The Blue Hose are returning six players who have combined for 149 games played ... Of the six just three have over one year of experience ... William Truss has seen action in 50 games, while Mac Lake has faced opponents 20 times in two seasons ... Russell McCray is the only other player with over a year experience and has played in six total games ...  In his first season Austin Anderson played in all 32 games, while Jordan Downing played in 29 ...

PC is next in action Nov. 12 at The Citadel ... It is a return game from the BracketBuster series from last season ... The Blue Hose snapped a 10-game losing streak against The Citadel with a 68-65 win last season ... A close game at the end, the Bulldogs cut the PC lead to two with 47 seconds remaining, but clutch free throws by Austin Anderson help the Blue Hose preserve the win ...

Nov. 15 marks PC’s return to Winston Salem, the site of the Blue Hose’s last victory over an ACC opponents ... PC earned its first win in 12 tries over an ACC school when it earned a 66-64 win at Wake Forest in 2010 ... Khalid broke a 64-64 tie with a lay-up at the eight second mark and the PC defense stopped WF from getting a shot off as time expired to come away with the upset win ...

PC takes part in the Cancun Challenge this season ... After traveling to Old Dominion Nov. 21 and West Virginia Nov. 23, the Blue Hose head to the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico for the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge ... After facing Bowling Green Nov. 26, PC will face either Oral Roberts or Georgia Southern Nov. 27 ...

The contest with Furman Dec. 7 has been officially designated as the 100-year Anniversary celebration game ... Furman was PC’s first ever opponent back in 1913, the first year of the basketball program ... The Paladins took the 30-9 win in that game ...
