Women's Tennis Pushes Past Albany, 6-1

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s tennis team ended non-conference play on a high note, knocking off visiting Albany by a 6-1 margin on Tuesday at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

PC improves to 7-8 on the year and will next hit the road for five straight Big South Conference matches away from home, beginning on Friday against Charleston Southern at 2:30 p.m. Albany moves to 5-7.

The Blue Hose earned the doubles point before dropping only one singles match en route to the win.

PC evened doubles action with a third-flight win as Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Kayla Stanford (Canton, Ga.) dispatched Mireille Hermans and Saran Iannone, 8-5. Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) and Courtney Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.) teamed up at No. 2 to seal the point with a tough 8-6 win over Irene Santos-Bravo and Cathryn Crummey.

Singles play began with a Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) win via retirement over Santos-Bravo followed by a convincing Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) victory over Hermans at the fifth flight, 6-4, 6-0.

With three points in hand, Alves captured the overall victory by rolling past Kirsten Scott at the third flight, 6-4, 6-0.

The teams then played 10-point tiebreakers in lieu of third sets with the result already decided. deLoach grabbed her team-leading eighth win of the season by besting Crummey at No. 5, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2).

At No. 6, Stanford knocked off Iannone in another tiebreaker match, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10).

The day’s lone loss came in a battle at the second flight. Gardiner faced Rocio Lopez Alberca and lost by the slimmest margin by coming up short in a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10) result.
