O'Connell, Bruce Sweep Big South Men's Tennis Honors for Second Time
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Presbyterian College senior William O’Connell (Nadi, Fiji) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Danny Bruce (Marietta, Ga.) has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played March 4-10, it was announced today by the League office.
O’Connell won four straight singles matches last week, helping the Blue Hose to extend its winning streak to eight. Playing at No. 2, he defeated Nicolas Vincent of SIU-Edwardsville, 6-2, 6-4; Andrea Boglic of South Dakota State, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4; Saint Joseph’s Tommy Gates 6-2, 6-4; and Grand Valley State’s Quinn Sylow, 6-3, 6-1. He partnered with Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England) for No. 1 doubles and defeated Southern New Hampshire 8-5, SUI-Edwardsville 8-6 and Saint Joseph 8-3. This is O’Connell’s third Player of the Week honor this season.
Bruce, playing at No. 3, earned crucial singles points for Presbyterian College last week. He downed Mike Wallace of Southern New Hampshire 6-4, 6-0, while partnering with Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) for an 8-1 doubles win at No. 3. Against SUI-Edwardsville, he defeated Jake Perkins 6-2, 7-5 and bested the Cougars’ tandem 8-5. In the match versus Saint Joseph’s, Bruce recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jose Sierra, while posting an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Bruce concluded his weekend with a 6-3, 7-6 win over South Dakota State’s Mateus Moreira and defeated Grand Valley State’s duo 8-5. This is Bruce’s second Freshman of the Week honor this season.
