ORLANDO, Fla. – The Presbyterian College women’s tennis team split its two matches on Tuesday, topping Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 5-2, before falling to South Dakota State by the same margin in Orlando, Fla.

PC ends the day at 4-6 overall. Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) won both of her singles matches while Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) pulled off an impressive top-flight win against South Dakota State.

PC 5, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 2

The Blue Hose began the day in winning fashion by downing the Cougars of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 5-2.

A doubles point helped propel the Blue Hose to the win. Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) and Courtney Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.) earned a tough win at the top flight, over Sierra Halverson and Kali Donner, 8-6.

Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Haley Elliott (Greenville, S.C.) followed with a dominating win at No. 3 over McKenzie Thomas and Amanda Miller, 8-0.

The Blue Hose then used four two-set singles wins to seal the victory, beginning with a second-flight result in favor of Gardiner. The junior rolled past Donner, 6-3, 6-2.

Alves knocked off Haley Ilcewicz at the third flight, 6-2, 6-0, while deLoach handled Halverson at No. 4, 6-4, 7-4.

Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out the victories by clinching the sixth-flight match. Leahy dispatched McKenzie Thomas, 7-5, 6-1.

South Dakota State 5, PC 2

The Blue Hose nearly matched South Dakota State in the day’s second match, but the fresher Jacks held off a surging PC squad.

Ransom downed Florencia Magni in a three-set thriller at No. 1. The sophomore took the first set, 6-2, before falling in the second, 6-0. Ransom then rallied to best Magni in the third, 6-3.

Leahy rolled to her second win in a two-set decision at the sixth flight. Leahy took a tough first set at 7-5 before closing out Tiffany Filipovich in the second, 6-2.

In doubles action, Alves and Gardiner combined for PC’s lone win. The duo knocked off Brooke Henry and Tacy Haws-Lacy at the second flight, 8-4.

The Blue Hose dropped several tough contests. Alves fell at the second flight to Ffion Davies in a three-set heartbreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) came up short to Beatriz Sousa, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
