CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Presbyterian College men's tennis swept this week's Big South Conference Men's Tennis Awards, with William O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji) earning Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honors while Danny Bruce (Marietta, Ga.) takes home The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week laurels for matches played Feb. 18-24, it was announced today by the League office. 

O’Connell earned three singles points, helping the Blue Hose to a three-game win streak.  In Monday’s match against new Conference memmber Longwood, he defeated Daniel Elston 7-5, 3-6, 61 at No. 2 and partnered with Andrew Brigham to top the Lancer duo of Harry Kelleher and Edward Becker, 8-2.  On Wednesday, O’Connell bested South Carolina State’s Tomas Bizon 6-2, 6-3.  He again partnered with Brigham for an 8-6 win at No. 1 against Anton Protsenko and Artemiy Nikitin.  He concluded his week with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yorsh Maksim of Kennesaw State.  This is O’Connell’s second Player of the Week plaudit this season.

Bruce went 3-0 in singles matches last week.  He downed Longwood’s Kelleher, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 and bested Jiri Stiburek of South Caorlina State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.  Against Kennesaw State, Bruce moved to the No. 3 position and defeated Louis Theodor 6-3, 6-3.  He also teamed up with Edward Snead for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Blue Hose take a few days off from competition before resuming play next week in Orlando, Fla. The team will play five opponents, beginning with Southern New Hampshire on Monday at 10 a.m.
