FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team won five singles matches in its Big South Conference opener to top Longwood on Monday afternoon, 5-2.

PC moves to 5-6 on the year and 3-6 in spring action, starting Big South play at 1-0. The Blue Hose next host SC State on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Longwood hosts Morgan State on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The win marks PC’s first ever in a Big South Conference opener.

The Blue Hose dropped the doubles point but won singles flights two through six en route to the victory.

William O’Connell (Nadi, Fiji) pulled out the most dramatic win of the day, downing Daniel Elston at No. 2. The Blue Hose fought off Elston in the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second, 3-6. O’Connell rallied, however, and secured the win with a 6-1 third-set victory.

At the third flight, Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) handled Edward Becker by a 6-3, 6-2 margin while Danny Bruce (Marietta, Ga.) dispatched Harry Kelleher at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.

Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England) pushed past Steed Johnson at the fifth flight, 7-6, 6-2, and Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) blanked James Fudge at the sixth flight, 6-0, 6-0.

PC took one match in doubles play as Brigham and O’Connell handled Kelleher and Becker, 8-3.

Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) dropped a tough top-flight match to Giorgi Khmiadashvili, 7-6, 6-0.
