PC Rally Falls Short at Radford

The Presbyterian College men's basketball team rallied back from a 17-point first-half deficit to tie the game at 45-45 with just over 12 minutes to go, but could not get ahead as Radford used a 15-5 run over the next six and a half minutes to pull away and take the eventual 76-65 win in action this afternoon at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.

PC drops to 6-19 overall and 3-8 in the Big South, while Radford improves to 11-14, 5-6.

Eric Washington led the Blue with 19 points, just two shy of his career-high.  Jordan Downing followed with 17 on the afternoon.  Leading on the boards was Joshua Clyburn with nine rebounds.  Javonte Green paced Radford with 27 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Ya Ya Anderson and Rashun Davis with 11 apiece.

PC shot 39.3% from the field compared to 43.1% for Radford, and was four-of-12 from the three-point line.  The Highlanders hit six-of-20 three-pointers and were 20-of-23 from the free-throw line.  The Blue Hose were 17-of-19 from the charity stripe.

Radford held the rebounding advantage, 40-31, including a 10-5 mark in offensive boards.

Anderson hit back to back three-pointers to open the game as Radford built a 10-0 lead before a basket by Downing made it 10-2 at 17:10.  The Highlanders made it a 10-point game again, 14-4, with 15:56 left before Downing connected on his first three of the game as the Blue Hose trailed 14-7 at the 15:24 mark.

The Highlanders scored seven unanswered to open up a 21-7 lead with just under 13 minutes left to play.  Down 26-9, Downing and Ryan McTavish hit back to back baskets to cut the PC deficit to 13, 26-13 at 10:24.

Both teams traded baskets the next seven minutes as Radford held on to a 13 to 15 point lead until the 3:32 mark when a dunk by Clyburn, off the Khalid Mutakabbir assist, cut the margin to just 11, 36-25.  Two free throws by Washington and the Blue Hose trailed by single digits again, 36-27, with 1:53 to go before intermission.

 Green hit two baskets down the stretch to put Radford back up by double-digits, 40-29, at the half.

Washington went to the line twice in the opening three minutes, going four-for four, while Downing added a three-pointer, to lead PC on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to two, 40-36, with 16:57 left in the game.

Clyburn hit a lay-up at 12:27 to tie the game at 45-45, before four unanswered by Radford made it 49-45 with 10:16 left.  Washington's three cut the RU lead to one, but the Highlanders answered with a three by Anderson and four points by Jalen Carethers to extend their lead to eight, 56-48, at the 7:39 mark.

It was part of a 23-8 run that saw Radford take a 15-point, 68-53 lead with 2:09 left in the game.  The Blue Hose and Highlanders traded baskets and free throws the remainder of the game as Radford came away with the 11-point 76-65 win.

The Blue Hose return for a two-game home stand with Coastal Carolina Wednesday, Feb. 13, and Winthrop Saturday, Feb. 16.  Both games are at 7 p.m.
