PC Menís Basketball Hosts VMI to Open Big South Play

The men's basketball team opens Big South Conference play Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against VMI Saturday Jan. 5 at the Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C.  PC is looking to open league play with a win for the first time since a 56-53 overtime victory over Coastal Carolina during the 2008-09 season.

VMI owns a 5-4 record over PC, the last game a 94-74 decision in favor of the Blue Hose Feb. 9, 2012.  Since PC has been in the Big South, these two teams have split the regular season series each season.  The first meeting ever was a 94-87 win for the Keydets back in 1957.

VMI is 5-7 overall after snapping a two-game losing streak with a 110-54 win over Shenandoah.  The Keydets are led by Big South pre-season Player of the Year Stan Okoye who is averaging 19.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.  D.J. Covington follows with 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.  VMI is averaging 83.2 ppg and 41.2 rpg, while holding their opponents to 79.2 points and 42.5 rpg.

PC is 3-11 overall, having snapped a four-game skid with a 77-35 win over Montreat Jan. 1.  Of the four losses two were against SEC foes, Tennessee and South Carolina.  The Blue Hose are led by Khalid Mutakabbir with his 14.6 points per game.  Joshua Clyburn, who is third on the team in scoring with 11.8 a game, leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game.  Jordan Downing is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 a game.  As a team the Blue Hose are averaging 61.9 points and 29.4 rebounds per game, compared to 71.2 points and 33.5 rebounds per game for the opposition.

The Blue Hose next travel to Coastal Carolina Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a 7 p.m. contest.
