PC Comes Up Short against Florida A&M
The Blue Hose came up short again at the Radisson North Florida Invitational held Sept. 7-8 in Jacksonville, Fla., falling to Florida A&M, 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 29-31), in volleyball action. PC went 1-2 in the tournament, with Mary Trimpe earning all-tournament efforts after averaging 5.45 digs per game as the libero.
The Blue Hose dropped to 2-9, while the Rattlers improved to 2-7.
Three Blue Hose recorded double-digit kills with Presley Mabrey leading the team with 12. Rachel Hall and Kelly Berryman followed with 11 apiece. Trimpe led the team with 20 digs, while Ashtin Frank led in assists with 40. PC totaled 46 kills, while FAMU had 49.
The Rattlers stormed out of the gates in game one, taking a 5-0 lead before PC put its first point on the board. Florida A&M continued to roll, building up a 12-3 lead helped in part by six Rattler kills. PC could not get any momentum, trailing FAMU by at least six points down the stretch, falling by the final 25-18 score.
Game two was closer than the first early one, with both teams battling back and forth. Tied 5-5, FAMU used a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead before PC cut the margin to two at 10-8, off a PC kill and block. The Rattlers maintained their lead of at least two the remainder of the game, taking the last three straight points to win 25-21.
Neither team could make headway in the third game with a total of 16 ties and four lead changes. PC had the first game point at 24-21, but FAMU rattled off three straight off two kills and a PC attack error to tie the game at 24-24. Mabrey's kill gave PC second game point but a FAMU kill tied the game at 25-25.
Hall's kill made it 26-25 for PC, but a Rattler kill the next play knotted the game again. FAMU made it 27-26 off a kill, but PC responded with another Hall kill to make it 27-27. A PC service error gave Florida A&M match point but the Rattlers couldn't convert after Hall came through again with the kill to tie the game at 28-28. Another back and forth made the score 29-29. FAMU went up 30-29 off a kill and sealed the win with a PC error to take the game 31-29.
The Blue Hose next travel to Greenville, S.C., Sept. 12, to take on the Furman Paladins
