Stegall Added to Volleyball Staff

Presbyterian College Head Volleyball Coach Chris Belshe announced today the addition of Christy Stegall as assistant volleyball coach.

"I am very pleased that Christy (Stegall) has decided to join me here at PC," said Belshe.  "Her familiarity with the school from growing up in South Carolina and playing at Newberry along with her experience as the first assistant at Louisiana Tech should help me, our student athletes and the program as a whole tremendously.  Christy comes strongly recommended and I am looking forward to her putting her mark on this program quickly."

I am excited to be returning to South Carolina and joining Coach Belshe and the Presbyterian College volleyball program," said Stegall.  "Coming from Newberry as a student I know of the proud tradition at PC and am happy to now be a part of it.  I am looking forward to helping the team achieve new heights as we make the transition to Division I this season and beyond."

Stegall recently completed her fourth year with the Louisiana Tech volleyball team working under head coach Matt Sonnichsen. Her defensive knowledge of the game, attention to detail and incredible work ethic were essential to the on-and-off-the-court successes of the Lady Techster program.

In addition to her on-the-floor role as assistant coach at Louisiana Tech, Stegall served as co-recruiting coordinator and team video coordinator while also being actively involved in the academic progress of the student-athletes. Through her efforts the program saw an improvement in its annual team grade point average (GPA), Academic Progress Rate (APR) and graduation success rate.  In 2011, the program recorded its highest multi-year APR score since 2003-04.

During Stegall's four years with Tech, the Lady Techsters saw 34 student-athletes earn Academic All-WAC accolades, including a program record 10 in 2011.

"Christy is a very hard working, organized, driven and friendly coach who will fit in great with me and the team," said Belshe.  "We will all benefit from her organization, coaching experiences, friendliness, and relentless work ethic."

Stegall has worked various summer camps and coaching clinics throughout the country. She has been actively involved in satellite camps for eight years, working directly with Sonnichsen for six of those years. Stegall has worked camps in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina and Texas.

The Fort Mill native lettered all four years at Newberry College. A three-time letterwinner at the libero position for Newberry, she was instrumental in one of the biggest turnarounds in the history of the South Atlantic Conference during her senior season. After the Lady Indians finished 4-30 in 2006, the 2007 squad finished 19-9 overall and in fourth place in the conference as Stegall recorded 246 digs on the year. She finished her career at Newberry ranked ninth all-time with 779 career digs, including a season-high of 322 digs in 2005, which ranks 10th all-time in program history.

Stegall earned her bachelor's degree in biology as well as minors in art, math and Spanish from Newberry in the spring of 2008 and is currently working on her master's degree in math.
