Five games against in-state opponents and a road trip to UC Berkeley highlight the 2011 Presbyterian College football schedule, it was announced today.
"I am excited about the 2011 schedule," said head coach Harold Nichols, who just finished his second year with the Blue Hose. "We play a very demanding schedule. We face three strong teams from the Southern Conference, and our conference slate which includes Liberty and Coastal Carolina, will be challenging for us as well. Cal will be a great trip for us. Coach (Jeff) Tedford is doing great things out there and it'll be a fun game and a great experience for our guys.
Presbyterian College opens Saturday, Sept. 3 against Wofford. PC owns a 40-38-3 record against the Terriers and last faced them in 2008, coming away with the 21-38 loss. That game renewed a rivalry that had been dormant since 1995, after meeting annually since 1946. The last time the Blue Hose defeated the Terriers at home was in 1989, 24-22, behind the arm of Nichols, who was the PC quarterback at the time.
After a stint against North Greenville Sept. 10, the Blue Hose travel to Berkeley, Calif., to take on the University of California Berkeley from the PAC-10 Sept. 17. The Golden Bears, who finished 5-7 last season, have played in a bowl game seven of the last eight years.
Including UC Berkeley, the Blue Hose are on the road for six of their next seven games, with stops at Furman (Sept. 24), Stony Brook (Oct. 8), Georgia Southern (Oct. 22), Liberty (Oct. 29) and Coastal Carolina (Nov. 5). In the middle is a home game against Big South foe Gardner Webb Oct. 15. PC defeated the Bulldogs, 26-24, in the last meeting and is 17-16 all-time.
Furman is just 11-39-1 against PC, but won the last meeting 45-21, Sept. 5, 2009. Georgia Southern takes on PC for the first time since 1984. The Eagles won that contest 41-6 and own a 2-0 all-time record.
Presbyterian College rounds out the 2011 slate with two home games, the first against VMI Nov. 12, and then Charleston Southern Nov. 19. The Blue Hose, who are 12-6 in the all-time series, will be looking to avenge a 39-42 loss to the Bucs in 2010.
