CLINTON, SC – The Presbyterian College baseball team defeated Longwood 5-3 on Friday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. Andrew Bladt delivered the decisive hit, a two-run double down the left field line, in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Blue Hose bullpen combined to hold the Lancers hitless over the final three innings, striking out five and walking one. PC improves to 15-33 on the season and 7-15 in the Big South, while Longwood falls to 14-35 and 7-15 in the Big South.

How It Happened

Longwood’s Sammy singled to lead off the game. He then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt that rolled foul. A fielding error by the first baseman would allow Miller to score and Justin Mitchell to reach base. After a hit by pitch advanced the Mitchell, Nate Blakeney would single to bring him home and put Longwood up 2-0. Tanner Chock would settle things down and record his first strikeout of the day to end the inning.

PC replied with two runs in the bottom of the first. Nick Guimbarda singled into left field and scored on a double from Jack McLaughlin. The senior first baseman would advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a double from Colton Chapman to tie the game at 2-2.

In the top of the third, the Lancers took a 3-2 lead on a solo shot from Mitchell to right field.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Varga singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on an erroneous throw. Tannor Byrd then advanced him to third and reached safely on an attempted sac bunt that was dropped by the first baseman. What appeared to be a sac fly by Bladt, that would have tied the game at 3-3, ended up seeing Varga called out at third after he failed to tag up properly. Jonathan White then doubled to move Byrd to third, but the inning ended on a groundout with PC still trailing 3-2.

AJ Priaulx singled through the left side to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Byrd walked to move Priaulx into scoring position. Then, Bladt cleared the bases with a double that barely went over third and directly down the left field line to put PC in the lead, 4-3.

The Blue Hose tacked on an insurance run courtesy of a long solo shot by McLaughlin in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was his fifth home run of the season.

PC's Ryan Hedrick, Will Smith and Colton Springs combined to throw three nearly perfect innings in relief. The trio faced the minimum nine batters and did not allow a hit. Hedrick struck out two, Smith walked one and forced a 6-4-3 double play, while Springs picked up his second save of the season by striking out the side on 10 pitches to end the game.

Pitchers of Record

Tanner Chock (3-2) picked up the win after allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four.

Colton Springs picked up his second save of the season after striking out the side, all swinging, on just 10 pitches.

Steven Farkas (2-8) took the loss for Longwood after allowing four runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings. He struck out three and walked four.
