CHARLESTON, S.C. – Presbyterian College baseball no-hit Charleston Southern for 5.1 innings in Saturday’s series finale at CSU Ballpark, but the Buccaneers rallied late to spoil PC’s bid at a series sweep, 5-2.
PC finishes the season at 27-28 overall and 6-18 in Big South Conference, setting a program record for wins in a Division I season. Charleston Southern improves to 23-28 on the year, 10-14 in the Big South and will play Coastal Carolina in Tuesday’s first round of the Big South Conference Championship.
The Blue Hose jumped to a 2-0 lead early before Charleston Southern scored five runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) and Ryan Hedrick (High Point, N.C.) each posted three hits. Lizanich joined fellow seniors Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) and Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) as players to hit safely in their final collegiate game. Senior Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly as well.
David Sauer (Irmo, S.C.) took the loss in relief to move to 5-5. Freshman starter Tanner Chock (Loris, S.C.) took a no-hitter into the sixth and left with 5.1 innings pitched, two hits, two runs and three strikeouts. Hayden Deal (Newton, S.C.) fanned three in 1.2 innings of work. Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) also pitched a scoreless inning.
PC grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a trio of hits. Hedrick and Peter Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) singled to put runners on the corners for Martin, who hit a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 PC lead. A Motroni double then bought home Johnson to extend the Blue Hose lead, 2-0.
Charleston Southern placed two with nobody out in the third, only to see PC’s defense snuff out the threat. A missed bunt allowed catcher McRae to nab the runner leading off at second.
Chock held the Bucs hitless into the sixth before the home side tied the game. The Bucs loaded the bases to bring in Deal with one out. A wild pitch scored one and a fielder’s choice reloaded the bases. Another fielder’s choice pulled Charleston Southern even on a double play that came within inches of ending the inning. Heads-up defense kept PC from falling behind, as Deal noticed the runner at third breaking for home for out number three.
The Bucs threatened in the seventh, getting a runner to third base with one away. Deal responded, however, striking out the next two to escape unscathed.
The eighth inning proved fatal for the Blue Hose. After a double play wiped out a promising top of the inning for PC, Charleston Southern scored three in the bottom of the frame. Four hits and three separate RBI singles from Cole Murphy, Sam Remick and Andrew Widell put the Bucs in front for good.
Hedrick picked up his third hit to start the ninth inning, but PC could not pull even as the Bucs came away with the win.
Chayce Hubbard moved to 4-0 by earning the win in relief and Denis Buckley picked up his fourth save. Brian Dye's two hits and Remick's two RBI led Charleston Southern offensively.
PC committed zero errors for the second straight game.
