Three two-run innings propelled the Campbell Camels to the 7-2 win over the Presbyterian College softball team in game one of a Big South doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.  PC dropped game two, 8-1.

 

CAM 7, PC 2

A RBI groundout by Caroline Smith in the bottom of the first put Campbell up by one early in the game.  PC answered in the top of the second, capitalizing on a double by Megan Anderson.  She scored off the second double in as many at-bats, this one by Lindsay Harris to tie the game.  In the bottom of second a single, walk and groundout put runners on second and third with two outs for the Camels. Hannah McCravy laced a single to right, bringing in both runs to make it 3-1.

 

Another double for PC, this one by Macy Hyatt, came in the top of the third, and drove in Jonnie Petree, who was on base off a one-out single, to cut the margin to one again, 3-2.  It was short-lived after Megan Mozingo hit a two-RBI double in the bottom of the frame to give the Camels the 5-2 lead.  Rachel McCollum added two more with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the home team the 7-2 win.

 

Campbell finished with seven runs, seven hits, and one error.  Leading the Camels was Mozingo with three hits and two RBI.  Megan Richards (16-9) pitched a complete game, giving up two runs off eight hits, with three strikeouts.

 

PC posted two runs, eight hits, and two errors.  Leading the Blue Hose was Petree with two hits and a run.  Alex Cook (0-15) went 2.2 innings, surrendering three hits and three earned runs.

 

CAM 8, PC 1

A Smith home run put the Camels ahead 1-0 in the first inning of game two.  The Camels opened the bottom of the third inning with a walk and single.  Smith hit her second home run in as many at-bats, sailing a three-run shot over the left field wall to give the home team the 4-0 lead.

 

Campbell opened the bottom of the fifth with a double and hit by pitch.  Back to back RBI singles brought those runners in to make it 6-0.  Manring stole home next to give the home team the 7-0 lead.

 

Chelsea Lyons led off the sixth with a double down the left field line, advancing to third off a Campbell error.  Lyons scored PC’s first run of the game the next at-bat after Petree sacrificed her in to make it 7-1.  A single, a walk, and a passed ball put runners on second and third with one error for Campbell in the sixth.  A sacrifice fly by Smith put the Camels up 8-1.

 

The Camels finished with eight runs, eight hits, and one error.  Smith led Campbell with a perfect three-for-three effort and five RBI.  Hutchins (--) pitched 5.0 innings of shutout softball, surrendering one hit.

 

PC recorded a run off three hits, with one error.  Anderson, Kelly Lucas, and Lyons each had a hit for the Blue Hose, with Petree coming away with a RBI.  Kaylee Allen started for PC, going 2.0 innings and giving up four runs off three hits.

 

For the Record

PC drops to 3-40 overall and 1-17 in the Big South, while Campbell improves to 25-23, 12-9.
