Winthrop scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the 4-1 extra inning win over the Presbyterian College softball team in the Big South series finale Sunday in Clinton, S.C.  Lindsay Harris led the Blue Hose with two hits and a RBI.

WIN 4, PC 1 (8)

Winthrop put together a two-out rally in the top of the first with a double to right by Blake Wallert.  She scored the next at-bat off a single from Ansley Gilreath to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.  An error and walk put runners on base with two outs in the third for PC, with Harris bringing home one of those with a triple to center field to knot the game at 1-1.

Both teams had several chances the next few innings but the pitchers for Winthrop and PC came through with clutch pitches when needed and no one was able to snap the deadlock.  With the game tied after seven innings, the game went into extras.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Wallert blooped a single to right field.  She stole second and reached third on a PC error.  Gilreath singled her in to move the Eagles ahead, 2-1.  Winthrop added two more insurance runs with a walk that put two runners on, and a Kiley Majette two RBI double that cleared the bases, making it 4-1.  PC went down in order the bottom of the frame as the Eagles came away with the 4-1 extra-inning win.

Winthrop posted four runs off seven hits, and had one error.  The Eagles were led by Majette (9-9) with her 8.0 innings of work and five strikeouts.  She also had two RBI off one hit.  She surrendered just four hits and one run.  Gilreath recorded two hits and two RBI.

Harris went two-for-three with one RBI, to lead a team the finished with four hits and one error.  Kaylee Allen (1-15) went 7.2 innings, and gave up four runs off seven hits, with three strikeouts.

For the Record

PC drops to 3-31 overall and 1-11 in the Big South, while Winthrop goes to 15-20, 5-7.
