A five run sixth inning broke open a two run game as the Liberty softball team completed the sweep over Presbyterian College with the 8-1 win in the final game of the Big South series Sunday afternoon in Clinton, S.C.  Megan Anderson provided PC’s lone run with a home run in the fourth.

After a scoreless first inning, Liberty opened the second with a walk and single to put a runner in scoring position. Taylor Hoffman brought in the game’s first run with a RBI single to left, a sacrifice fly by Autumn Bishop two batters later making it 2-0.  Amber Bishop laced a RBI single to left to make it 3-0 in favor of the Flames.

 

PC cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun by Megan Anderson, her first of the season, to make it 3-1.

 

In the top of the sixth Alexia Taylor put the Flames back up by three with a RBI single, while Sarah Robertson tacked on two more with a two-RBI double to center.  Liberty went up 8-1 two batters later after Deidra See knocked a two-run homerun over the left field wall.  Neither team would score in the seventh as the Flames came away with the seven-run win.

 

Alex Cook (0-8) started for PC, going 5.1 innings and surrendering three earned runs off 12 hits for the loss.  Julia DiMartino (15-5) threw a complete game, giving up one run off two hits, with six strikeouts.

 

Leading Liberty on offense was See with her four-for-four effort, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Autumn and Amber Bishop each recorded two hits and one RBI.  Anderson posted a hit and RBI for PC with Jonnie Petree adding the team’s second hit.

 

The Blue Hose finished with one run, two hits, and two errors, while the Flames recorded eight runs off 14 hits, with two errors.

 

For the Record

PC moves to 2-27 overall and 0-6 in the Big South, while Liberty improves to 25-8, 6-0. 

 

Up Next

In its next series, PC travels to Charleston Southern Mar. 30-31, for a three-game Big South set.  First pitch of the single game Friday is at 4 p.m., with a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m., Saturday.
