Port Charlotte, Fla. – The Presbyterian College baseball team split Friday’s games at the Snowbird Classic, earning a victory against Mount Saint Mary’s in game one, 13-2, before falling to Northeastern in game two, 6-1. PC moves to 5-7, Mount Saint Mary’s falls to 2-5, and Northeastern improves to 5-3.
How it Happened (Game 1)
The scoring began in the bottom of the second after Chase Blueberg hit Thomas Savastio with a pitch. Savastio would eventually score after three wild pitches to put Mount Saint Mary’s up 1-0.
In the top of the third, Andrew Bladt and TJ Richardson singled to start the Blue Hose rally. Jack McLaughlin reached on an error, and AJ Priaulx put PC up 3-1 with a base-clearing double. In the bottom of the third, Eric Miles came on in relief and shut the Mount down over the next four innings.
In the top of the fourth, the Blue Hose loaded the bases again behind a Guy Casaceli walk, Hunter Grover hit-by-pitch, and Jonathan White reaching on an error. A pair of sacrifice flies by Bladt and Nick Wise along with a TJ Richardson single extended PC’s lead to 6-1.
Both teams scored one run in the fifth inning. In the top half, Casaceli recorded an RBI single to bring Priaulx in and put PC up 7-1. The Mount would get one run back in the bottom half after a Sean Kelly double and Myles Nicholson single made it 7-2.
In the top half of the sixth inning, McLaughlin and Priaulx recorded RBI singles scoring Bladt and Richardson to put PC up 9-2.
In the seventh inning, Thatcher Coleman singled to score Rob Greco and Casaceli to make the score 11-2. Miles struck out the first batter in the seventh inning before being replaced by Russ Branch after 4.1 innings of 3-hit work. Mount Saint Mary’s would load the bases before Branch induced a groundout by Andrew Revels to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Priaulx recorded his second double of the day, and Casaceli singled to record his fourth hit of the day. Hunter Grover drove in Priaulx with a sacrifice fly, and Greco recorded an RBI single to score Casaceli.
Grayson Stoneking then forced the Mount to go 1-2-3 in the eighth and struck out the side in the ninth to give PC the 13-2 victory.
How it Happened (Game 2)
During the bottom of the first, Tanner Chock walked four batters and gave up an RBI groundout to Zach Perry that saw Northeastern take a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Casaceli drew a walk before singles from White and Chapman made it 2-1.
Kyle Peterson would give the Huskies a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single that scored Max Burt.
Connor Jahn relieved Chock in the fifth inning and faced the next six batters. Jake Farrell hit a leadoff double before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning. Peterson also doubled and scored after Jahn walked the next two batters and was relieved by Ryan Hall. The senior would walk another run in before getting a ground out to end the inning at 5-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Solomon scored Farrell with an RBI single to left to make the score 6-1.
In the eighth inning, the Blue Hose threatened by loading the bases, but the Huskies’ bullpen induced a double play ground out by Coleman.
Connor Slagill singled to start the top of the ninth, but the Blue Hose could not get a rally going and fell to the Huskies 6-1.
Pitchers of Record (Game 1)
Eric Miles (3-1) earned the win going 4.1 innings of work, giving up one run on three hits and striking out five.
Andrew Malone (0-1) took the loss after giving up six runs on six hits and striking out two in 4.0 innings of work.
Pitchers of Record (Game 2)
Brian Christian (1-2) picked up his first victory of the year going 6.0 innings, striking out seven, and giving up just one run on seven hits.
Tanner Chock (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and striking out seven in 4.0 innings of work.
PC Players of the Day
- Guy Casaceli went 4-4 with three runs scored against Mount Saint Mary’s. He walked twice and scored PC’s only run against Northeastern.
- Andrew Bladt went 3-4 with two RBI against Mount Saint Mary’s.
- Colton Chapman went 2-5 with 1 RBI against Northeastern.
- AJ Priaulx went 3-6 with one RBI and two runs scored against Mount Saint Mary’s. He then went 2-4 against Northeastern to end the day at 5-10 (.500).
The Blue Hose will play their next five games at home beginning with a game against NC Central at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 7. The team will then face Harvard in a four-game series beginning on Friday, March 9.
