CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team (27-27, 12-11 Big South) tied the school’s Division I era win record with its 27th victory on Friday, a 3-1 win over Charleston Southern (18-34, 5-18 Big South) at the PC Baseball Complex. The Blue Hose matched last season’s win total and will look to top it, as they go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Tanner Chock (3-3) earned the victory with 5.0 innings of one-run baseball on three hits with a career-high-tying seven strikeouts against no walks. CSU starter Daniel Johnson (4-6) was tagged with the loss, going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks against four strikeouts. Hayden Deal earned his seventh save of the season and second of the week with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The top five hitters in the order for PC recorded a hit, led by Jacob Midkiff with a 2-for-4 afternoon with a run. Ryan Hedrick added two hits with an RBI, while Tyler Weyenberg, Weston Jackson and AJ Priaulx each recorded a double in the victory. Jackson added an RBI on a sac fly to push his season total to 54, three shy of the school’s Division I era record.

PC got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Priaulx led off the inning with a double to right center and Midkiff followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Peter Johnson laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to move the runners up ninety feet with just one out. An RBI single by Hedrick plated the first and a sacrifice fly by Auckland knocked in the second to give PC a 2-0 lead.

Charleston Southern cut it in half with a run in the third. A leadoff single by Ryan Maksim and a one-out double by Chris Singleton put runners on second and third with just one out. Chock would back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning but not before a wild pitch allowed the runner from third to score and make it a 2-1 ballgame.

PC manufactured a run in the fifth to extend its lead. Weyenberg led off the inning with a double and Cletis Avery moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Jackson then drove him in with a sac fly to center to put PC in front 3-1.

Ethan Wortkoetter, Aaron Lesiak and Deal combined to throw 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. Wortkoetter tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts against one walk. Lesiak and Deal each recorded a hitless inning in the eighth and ninth, respectively. PC pitching combined for 12 strikeouts in the win.

PC essentially locked up the No. 5 seed in the Big South tournament with the victory. The Blue Hose will officially learn its tournament fate on Saturday after the conclusion of the regular season.
