BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team (24-23, 10-11 Big South) fell to Campbell (24-22, 11-7 Big South), 7-5, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium in Buies Creek, N.C.
Weston Jackson led the Blue Hose at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. He tied the PC Division I single-season record for doubles with his 23rd two-bagger of the season in the first inning. Jacob Midkiff recorded two hits for the second straight day, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Campbell starter Michael Horrell (5-4) earned the win, going 7.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and no strikeouts. PC starter David Sauer (4-3) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts against one walk. The save went to Erik Dowse, his fourth of the season, as he allowed one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched.
PC wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Glen Casaceli reached with one out on a hit-by-pitch to put a man on first. Jackson then doubled to right center to score Casaceli from first and give the Blue Hose a 1-0 lead.
Campbell responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Anthony Lopez hit his second first-inning home run of the series with a solo shot to left with one out. After a fly out for the second out, a single and a hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second. Zach Minnick then singled through the left side to plate the runner from second and make it a 2-1 CU advantage.
The Camels busted the game open in the third with four runs to extend their lead. With two on and no outs, Matt Parrish started it with an RBI single to left to score the first run and keep runners at first and second. Two batters later, Minnick doubled to right to score Parrish from second and Adam Wyse followed with a two-run single to right to make it a 6-1 Campbell lead.
The Blue Hose added a run in the fifth with two outs. Mick Tinny singled to center to put a runner on first and Cletis Avery followed with an RBI double to right center to drive him in and cut the lead to 6-2.
PC edged a run closer with another two-out run in the sixth. Jackson got his second hit of the day with a bunt single with one out. Two batters later, Midkiff doubled inside the bag at third to score Jackson from third to cut the lead to 6-3.
Campbell tacked on a run in the seventh inning. Parrish singled to left field with two outs for Drew Butler, who doubled down the left-field line to score him and push the lead to 7-3.
The Blue Hose cut in to the lead again in the eighth. Tyler Weyenberg reached on an error to the shortstop to start the inning and Peter Johnson followed with a pinch-hit single to put two on with no outs and chase Horrell from the game. Erik Dowse came on to pitch for the Camels and retired the first two he faced with strikeouts. Midkiff broke it up with an RBI single to right to score Weyenberg and make it a 7-4 game.
PC then made things interesting in the ninth inning. Nick Wise led off with a pinch-hit double that one-hopped the wall in right field. Guy Casaceli came on to pinch run for Wise and a groundout to second moved him to third with one out. After a strikeout for the second out, Weyenberg singled to the second baseman up the middle to drive in Casaceli and make it a 7-5 game with the potential tying run coming to the plate. Ultimately, Dowse got the next batter to strikeout to end the ballgame.
Parrish finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI to lead the Camels at the plate. Minnick was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs, while Jimmy Monaghan had two hits and Lopez homered and scored twice.
The Blue Hose return to action on Tuesday at South Carolina for a 7 p.m. matchup. They will then host VCU in a three-game, non-conference series starting on Friday at the PC Baseball Complex.
