CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team fell to Wofford, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex in Clinton, S.C. The Blue Hose fall to 10-6 with the loss, while the Terriers improve to 12-6 on the season.
Tyler Weyenberg, reigning Big South Player of the Week, went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI to lead PC at the plate. The bottom four in the order for PC each recorded a hit. Cletis Avery and Rob Koski each went 1-for-2, while Ryan Hedrick was 1-for-3 with a run and Peter Johnson went 1-for-4 with a run.
Elliott Lance (3-0) earned the victory for Wofford with a strong relief outing, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing two runs (zero earned) on five hits with one walk against three strikeouts. David Sauer (2-1) was tagged with loss, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts against no walks in 6.0 innings pitched.
Wofford opened the game with a run in the first. Alec Paradowski hit a solo home run to lead off the game and give the Terriers the early 1-0 lead. It was the first time this season that an opponent had scored first against PC at home.
PC got on the board with two runs in the second. Jacob Midkiff and Avery led off the inning with back-to-back walks and Johnson followed with a single through the left side to load the bases. Koski would draw a bases loaded walk to score one and two batters later Auckland followed with a sac fly to left to bring in the second, giving PC a 2-1 lead.
Wofford tied the game with a run in the fifth inning. A leadoff triple by McClain Bradley followed by a single up the middle tied the game at 2-2. PC would turn one of its two double plays on the day to erase the runner before a force out ended the inning two batters later.
The Terriers broke the game open in the sixth with three runs. A fly out and two HBPs put two on with one out. Brett Hash then drove a ball out to left for a three-run home run to give Wofford a 5-2 lead.
They would add it in the eight with three more runs. Paradowski led off the inning with a double and a bunt single and a throwing error allowed him to score from second. Three batters later, with the bases loaded and one out, a walk brought home the second run of the inning and kept the bases full. A fielder’s choice to shortstop scored the third run of the inning but PC was able to throw out a runner at the plate 6-3-2 to prevent another run.
PC looked to rally in the ninth. After a groundout, Hedrick drew a walk and an error by the second basemen allowed him to go to third and Brett Auckland to reach with just one out. A single by Weyenberg plated Hedrick and a sac fly by Weston Jackson brought home Auckland to cut the lead to 8-4. Lance would get a fly out to center to end the game and hand PC just its second home loss of the season.
Paradowski went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with a double, a home run, three runs and an RBI to lead the Terriers. Max McDouglad added a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while Bradley was 2-for-4 with a run. Hash went 1-for-3 with the home run, two runs and three RBIs.
The Blue Hose are back in action this weekend with a three-game series at The Citadel beginning Friday at 5 p.m. with the final two games of the series on Saturday and Sunday each slated for a 1 p.m. start.
