ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team topped Winthrop, 59-48, Tuesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum. Allie Wagner led the Blue Hose with her third career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Blue Hose improved to 9-7, 5-2 in the Big South Conference, while Winthrop fell to 2-12, 1-4 on the season. PC stays on the road and battles Campbell 7 p.m. Tuesday in Buies Creek, N.C.
Rebecca Walker (Snellville, Ga.) added 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Janie Miles (Clemson, S.C.) dropped 10 points and dished three assists. Winthrop’s Erica Williams led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Aliyah Kilpatrick added 14 points and four steals.
Winthrop opened the game on a 4-0 run and held its only lead of the game. The Blue Hose answered with a 12-0 run before Kilpatrick converted a three-pointer. PC then closed the quarter on a 7-3 run and ended the first with an 18-9 lead. The Blue Hose held the Eagles to 25.0 percent (4-of-16) shooting in the period.
The Eagles started the second half with a 5-0 run and cut the PC lead to four at 18-14. The Blue Hose responded with a 9-0 run and pulled out to a 28-14 lead, their largest of the game. Winthrop closed the half with a 4-0 run while PC took a 28-18 lead into the locker room.
Wagner (Easley, S.C.) scored seven of her 11 points in the third period. She sank a three-pointer and made a jumper that extended the PC lead to 35-22 at the 6:26 marker. The Blue Hose ended the third quarter with four free throws, while Winthrop’s Kilpatrick ended the quarter with a three-pointer. PC held a 41-31 lead into the final period.
Winthrop went on a 5-0 run in the beginning of the fourth quarter and pulled within five at 41-36. The Blue Hose responded with a 13-4 run and returned the lead to 54-40. The Blue Hose put the game away with five free throws.
The Blue Hose held Winthrop to 32.8 percent (20-of-61) shooting from the floor in the game. PC held a 22-10 points in the paint and a 14-4 bench points advantage in the game.
