CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team used a second quarter surge and collected a 70-53 win over Brevard (N.C.) Wednesday at the Templeton Center. The Blue Hose outscored the Tornados 21-6 in the second period.
The Blue Hose went to 2-4 on the season, while the Tornados fell to 0-4. Freshman guard Taylor Petty (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the way for PC for the fourth time this season with 18 points and added three steals and two rebounds. Petty shot 6-of-12 from the floor and sank five 3-pointers.
Brevard held a 16-11 lead after the first quarter. The Tornados shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the floor in the period and held the Blue Hose to 23.5 percent (4-of-17) shooting. Lynsey Crisp scored seven of her 12 points in the first for Brevard.
Whitney DeMoss made a layup at the 9:07 marker of the second quarter and put the Tornados up seven. PC went on a 19-0 run in the quarter before DeMoss converted another layup while less than 30 seconds remained in the half. The Blue Hose took a 32-22 into the locker room.
Brevard pulled within single digits twice in the third quarter and once in the final period.
DeMoss led the Tornados with 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while Hadara Bannister contributed 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Saline Virola and Rebecca Walker both poured in double digit points for the Blue Hose. Virola (Huntsville, Ala.) scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Walker (Snellville, Ga.) dropped 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Aianna Kelly (Newport News, Va.) led PC with seven rebounds.
Presbyterian begins conference play against UNC Asheville 7 p.m. Monday at the Templeton Center.
